Perk up at these downtown and Oliver Edmonton coffee shops

Coffee is the best. It keeps us awake, motivated and kicking through long days. Local food blogger Phil Wilson aka Baconhound fills us in on his favourite places downtown and in the Oliver area to grab a cup of java.

Duchess Bake Shop

1
10720 124 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5M 0H1

Yes, Duchess is a world-renowned bakery, but nothing goes better with a flakey croissant than an expertly-crafted latte and they've got you covered on both fronts. Duchess uses Matchstick coffee from Vancouver and it’s the perfect pairing to any of their mouth-watering desserts. Their pastry case sells out early, so if you plan on going later in the day for a coffee, you'll have your pick of tables and can enjoy the European atmosphere without the throngs of people.

The Coffee Bureau

2
10505 Jasper Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 1Z4

Right across the street from Lock Stock, Coffee Bureau offers more of a mid-century modern feel to downtown's coffee district - think of Mad Men, but with caffeine instead of whiskey. Brewing ACE coffee, which is roasted right here in Edmonton, and serving up baked goods from Leva Café, Coffee Bureau is another great addition to Jasper Avenue.

Redstar

3
10534 Jasper Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 1Z7

A small coffee counter that shares space with the popular Red Star Pub, Lock Stock offers up a bit of rock and roll to the downtown coffee scene. A rosemary bacon cornbread muffin and an Americano (made with Italian staple Danesi coffee) are great fuel for shopping the nearby Downtown City Market on Saturday mornings.

Credo Coffee Ltd

4
L100-10350 124 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5N 3V9

With two locations to choose from - one in the heart of downtown and one on 124 Street - Credo believes in providing the highest standard of quality and taste in every cup of coffee. They use only Intelligentsia Direct Trade coffee and treat the product with the respect it deserves.

District Café and Bakery

5
101-10011 109 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 3S8

District is a fantastic coffee shop that is ready to serve up whatever you're in the mood for. Soup and sandwiches? Check! Muffins and scones? Of course! Homemade marshmallow-topped rice krispie squares? Hell, yeah! Brewing Calgary's Phil & Sebastian coffee, District offers the perfect respite from the bustle of downtown.
