Shake it up at a Vancouver milkshake bar near you

There’s nothing quite so nostalgic as pouring a thick shake from a stainless steel cup into a tall glass and sucking up that perfect mixture of ice cream and milk through a straw. Amp it up with classic or non-traditional flavours and maybe a shot of something alcoholic? Bliss.

Lucy's Eastside Diner

2708 Main St, Vancouver, BC V5T 3E8

A favourite haunt for the late-night crowd, Lucy’s satisfies your craving for a milkshake at any hour. Aside from the classics, they also offer peanut butter, Oreo and mint, which are all great daytime options. But if you’re thinking about a bit of a spiked dessert, consider one of their three boozy shakes like the Southern Cup, a chocolate-peanut butter shake finished with Wild Turkey, Baileys and Fireball or the Tropical Jerry with rum and fruit. Dessert and a nightcap all in one.

Moderne Burger

865 Broadway W, Vancouver, BC V5Z 1J9

This slick and shiny diner in Kitsilano is all about retro nostalgia. It’s clear in their design and décor of neon and vintage pin-up girl posters and in their pared-back menu: burgers, fries, sodas and shakes. They put a twist on tradition, though, with Coffee-Mocha and Chocolate-Covered Cherry flavours, but pull at our drugstore-soda-shop memories by offering malts in these flavours as well. Grab two straws and put a quarter in the jukebox, you’re being transported to the ‘50s.

The Templeton

1087 Granville St, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1L4

With no hint of modesty, the folks at this favourite downtown diner call out their shakes on the menu as “The world’s best $6 milkshake.” Candy Bar Whirl, Creamsicle or Root Beer are a few of the candy shop flavours to choose from. Grab a red-vinyl spinning stool at the bar and sip your thick shake while watching vintage cartoons. And if this is feeling a little too kid-like, ask the bartender to spike it for an extra $4.

Save On Meats

43 Hastings St W, Vancouver, BC V6B 1G4

Another diner tugging at our nostalgic heart strings, this restaurant-butcher-shop-social-enterprise actually returned the space to its former glory, complete with the lunch counter once frequented by workmen, lumberjacks and ladies shopping at Woodward’s. Its modern twist comes in the form of Adult Milkshakes. Stick with the butcher-shop theme and try The Legendary: Wild Turkey and bacon whipped into a chocolate shake and topped with bacon bits. Sip this thick, tasty concoction through a straw and appreciate the history around you.
