Spice it up: Edmonton groceries with ethnic flair

If you love to cook, but need a little new inspiration – try taking a trip to one of these neighbourhood groceries for tastes from around the world. This week, treat yourself to a Middle Eastern picnic, Sunday morning dim sum and authentic British teatime. Bon voyage!

Spice Centre

For more than 20 years, the Spice Centre has been a community hub in the city’s Little India in Mill Woods. You’ll find a huge selection of spices and curry blends, fresh vegetables, imported East and West Indian groceries, glamorous bangles and fashion. The shop also stocks an impressive collection of Bollywood music and movies.

Italian Centre Shop

10878 95 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5H 2E4

A trip to this shop in Little Italy is always a special treat. Buy pasta, olives, deli treats and baked goods for home or pick up everything you need for a picnic at lovely Giovanni Caboto Park right across the street. Buy your naturally raised chemical-free meats and wine grapes for home brewing here. The shop has been an Edmonton landmark since it opened in1959, and they now have shops on the south side and west end, too.

Lucky Supermarket

10725 97 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5H 2L9

Right in the heart of Chinatown, Lucky 97 is a big grocery store with fresh vegetables, fish, frozen foods, groceries and housewares from all over Asia. You can do your whole weekly shopping trip here – they have every kind of tofu imaginable – or take out hot foods from the buffet or dim sum.

Argyll Foods

9844 63 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 0G6

On Argyll Rd, on the southern edge of Hazeldean, you’ll find a fully-stocked Latin grocery with authentic imports, baked goods and hot prepared foods – try their special Mexican tortilla soup (only Abuela will know you didn’t make it yourself). Stock up on tortillas, refried beans and hot hot hot sauce for this week’s Taco Tuesday.

Dutch Delicious

13232 118 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5L 4N4

Visit this Dutch bakery the next time you’re hosting brunch. Treat your guests to almond and apple torte, mocha cake, Dutch bread and buns bursting with raisins. You’ll also find imported groceries from all over Europe – and you can stock up at the deli on meat and cheese for brown bag lunches, picnics and easy dinners.

Westgate Halal Meat & Deli

9550 163 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5P 3M7

Located in the west end, this neighbourhood grocery and deli serves up warm fresh bread and quick prepared meals like roast chicken, samosas, tabouli, stuffed olives and hummus. You’ll also find lots of dry goods and fresh meats here to make your own Middle Eastern feasts.

All these things call for a nice, cold drink: hot summer days, sitting round with friends, the end of a long work week, showers. If you know all about shower beers, read on for a generous list of Edmonton’s small batch distillers, brewers and wine-makers – tour the factories and perhaps taste a small sample or bring some home for tonight’s barbecue. Kids, before there was streaming, even before those silver plastic discs that played music, there were vinyl records. We old folks liked the big album art, lyric sheets and popping crackle sounds – and you can spend hours flipping through the racks in a record store; you never know what you might find. Here’s where find out what gatefolds and RPMs are – at a used record shop in Edmonton.
Take a deep cleansing breath and focus your intention on getting these aching old bones back to your practice. Transform your life and body at one of these west end yoga studios.
