Sweet specialty bakeries in Edmonton worth swooning over

When you’re looking for your favourite dessert or a particular kind of pastry, the average bakery just won’t do. Fortunately, Edmonton has plenty of bakeries that specialize in different areas, including gluten-free, vegan and kosher, or create delicious treats from a different part of the world.

Kinnikinnick Foods Inc

10940 120 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5H 3P7

This bakery and store sells more than 200 gluten-free, dairy-free and nut-free products. You can buy fresh-baked goods such as bread, muffins, doughnuts and squares, or frozen or dry goodies to bring home, including pasta, crackers, soup and cookies. They also sell a ton of other gluten-free brands at the store, such as Freybes and Happy Planet. And, during any holiday season, they sell Belgian chocolates, made in-house. If you have other dietary restrictions, you can order a custom cake by advance order.

King of Dates Sweets & Bakery

21-9312 34th Avenue NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 5X8

This cute shop specializes in Mediterranean delicacies, such as stuffed dates, baklava and kataifi. They sell these treats fresh from a glass display case but also have wrapped up, pre-made platters of pastries for you to take home. Their fresh dates are the best – and you can buy them by the box – but the stuffed dates are also delightful. They’re filled with a creamy, sweet paste and topped with a sprinkle of pistachio bits.

Dutch Delicious

13232 118 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5L 4N4

The owners, who are originally from Holland, whip up delicious treats that remind them of home. Specialty items include Dutch raisin bread, mocha cake squares and almond tortes. They also make mergpijpen, an oblong-shaped pastry covered in real marsepein, also known as marzipan. The bakery imports Dutch products, along with some European items.

Rio Vida Gluten Free Bakery & Food Manufacturing

17515 100 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5S 2B8

This baker specializes in gluten-free products but also makes gluten-free treats that are egg-free or completely vegan. She bakes her egg-free and vegan products on separate days from her pastries that are just gluten-free to avoid cross-contamination. The muffins, doughnuts, cakes and pies are all made from scratch, and she also sells some frozen items, such as pizza crust and flatbreads, to take home.

Al Salam Bakery Deli & Restaurant

3-10141 34 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 6J8

This Middle Eastern restaurant is known for its amazing pita bread and chicken shawarma, but not everyone realizes there is a bakery attached to the restaurant. It serves up Middle Eastern pastries and desserts that are so sweet but so delightful – totally worth the risk of diabetes.

Bliss Baked Goods

10710 142 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5N 2P7

This bakery specializes in kosher and nut-free products but they also bake many vegan delights. They are particularly known for their amazingly light, fluffy vegan doughnuts. These doughnuts are so good that most people don’t even realize they are missing eggs and milk. For a change of pace, try their variety of vegan pastries, such as croissants and fruit turnovers. Some contain honey, but the staff can point out the baked goods that are fully vegan.

Wild Earth Bakery & Cafe

8902 99 St NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 3V4

They offer vegan, gluten-free and sugar-free baking, in addition to their “regular” breads and sweet treats. The bakers behind the gluten-free monster cookies believe in making all of their desserts taste delish, whether it is missing the white flour or not. They even have a few treats that are both gluten-free and vegan, such as the Vegan Bliss cookie.
