Use your noodles: Asian street food in Vancouver

Tasty, inexpensive food found in roadside carts, street stalls and all-night markets is a staple of Asian lifestyle, whether you’re in Thailand, Japan, China or somewhere in between. Thankfully, these spicy, flavourful dishes are turning up all over Vancouver in sit-down restaurants so we don't have to get on a plane half way around the world to indulge our cravings.

Japadog (Food Truck)

530 Robson St, Vancouver, BC V6B 2B7

This wouldn’t be a list of Vancouver’s Asian street food without the legendary JAPADOG. It’s exactly what it sounds like: hot dogs topped with delicious Japanese flavours, like teriyaki sauce, seaweed, kimchi and even fried noodles. Check out their permanent Robson Street store front, food carts in select spots downtown or the mobile truck that makes the rounds.

The Union

219 Union St, Vancouver, BC V6A 2B2

The Union is well known for its creative Asian fusion brunches on the weekends, and for good reason. A definite must-try dish: the Bao Bun Benny. But this Chinatown establishment is hopping on most evenings of the week, too. Tuck into their pork dumplings, Pad Thai or beef satay, order up some cocktails and enjoy the cool, fun atmosphere.

Laksa King

2546 Hastings St E, Vancouver, BC V5K 1Z3

As the name suggests, laksa (a spicy curry and rice-noodle soup in the Peranakan cuisine, a combination of Chinese and Malay cuisines) rules this little kingdom in Hastings-Sunrise. But Laksa King’s well-rounded menu also boasts street-style food from across Asia, including roti canai, Singapore noodles and Pad Thai that’s fit for royalty.

Roaming Dragon

1441 Clark Dr, Vancouver, BC V5L 3K9

Any food truck that claims to be “authentically unauthentic Pan-Asian” gets our vote. The Korean- and Malaysian-inspired tacos, Chinese pork sliders and Thai dragon burger are definitely authentically delicious. The Roaming Dragon truck is usually found around Robson and Burrard, and they do catering and special events, too.

Hawkers Delight Deli

4127 Main St, Vancouver, BC V5V 3P6

This charming little hole-in-the-wall joint on Main Street has a devoted clientele and is great for take-out. The photo menu above the counter and the incredibly low prices evoke food stalls in Singapore and Malaysia. Don’t miss out on their vegetable fritters, curry chicken noodles and mee goreng — unbeatable Malaysian spicy fried noodles.

Indochine Kitchen

1 Broadway E, Vancouver, BC V5T 1V4

Indochine Kitchen + Bar is a hot spot on Broadway just off Main Street that serves up street-style food in refined and modern surroundings. You’ll find daring fusions like butter beef carpaccio alongside standard street-food dishes such as papaya salad and noodle soups. Get in there for the lunch deals or soak up the bar-lounge atmosphere at dinner.

1938 4th Avenue W, Vancouver, BC V6J 1M5

This Kitsilano restaurant riffs on Thai street food with innovative flair and repackages it for stylish dining. Each dish bursts with fresh flavours from seasonal ingredients and locally sourced products. Especially notable are Maenam’s Pad Thai, hot and sour soup and green curry. There are also plenty of vegan options on the menu.

On a cold, snowy Edmonton night, nothing says lovin’ like a cup of hot chocolate. It’s no surprise this drink was originally dubbed the “elixir of the gods.” Regardless of the variety you select, or whether you opt for the simplest hot chocolate on the menu, all I can say is ... don’t forget the marshmallows.
