Vancouver’s must-try sushi for every occasion

The West Coast might truly be the best coast, with its access to fresh ocean-ingredients and highly skilled Japanese chefs. Vancouver’s sushi joints have a wide variety of offerings (for a wide variety of budgets!), from authentic melt-in-your-mouth sashimi to wild fusion rolls you never would’ve expected to enjoy.

Kishimoto Japanese Restaurant

1
2054 Commercial Dr, Vancouver, BC V5N 4A9

Serving (arguably) the best aburi sushi in the city, the line-up often found outside Kishimoto is completely understandable. The flame-seared, box-pressed salmon oshisushi is one of their most popular dishes, and pairs perfectly alongside their super fresh sashimi, served on ice. They are nothing but thorough, offering incredibly attentive service and beautifully plated dishes, all at a reasonable price – what more can you ask for?

The Eatery

2
3431 Broadway W, Vancouver, BC V6R 2B4

For a funky dining experience unlike any other (we’re talking UV lights and customized t-shirts here!), this trendy spot is the place to go. Known for its ‘innovative’ sushi, the Eatery offers funky flavour combinations in rolls like the Japanese Fortress (spicy tuna with cucumber, topped with yam fries), the Drunken Monkey (smoked salmon, cream cheese, tempura asparagus, crab, roe and eel) and the KFC roll – take a guess as to what’s in this one! Conventional diners needn’t fear; their traditional fare is just as enjoyable.

Miku Japanese Restaurant

3
70-200 Granville St, Vancouver, BC V6C 1S4

Located on the waterfront with a spectacular ocean view, Miku is the epitome of a fancy, high quality dining experience. One of the most popular sushi restaurants in Vancouver, they serve fresh sushi and sustainable seafood (and delicious desserts, might I add!) with a sophisticated ambiance. The experience admittedly comes with a price that’s a bit higher than that of the typical sushi joint – but it’s definitely worth the occasional splurge!

Sushi Itoga

4
1668 Robson St, Vancouver, BC V6G 1C7

It might be hard to choose a sushi bar from the overwhelming selection in the West End, but Sushi Itoga should absolutely be a top contender. With a communal table and customers ordering at the front counter, this little joint is perfect for a quick bite that doesn’t compromise on quality for convenience.

Ajisai Sushi Bar

5
2081 42nd Ave W, Vancouver, BC V6M 2B4

Many are blown away when they taste the mouth-watering sashimi at this quaint little spot, hidden in the heart of Kerrisdale. Diners can watch the sushi chefs work their magic, expertly slicing fresh pieces of fish and delicately arranging them onto beautiful plates. There might be a wait for a table at Ajisai, but it’s well justified if you’re a fan of fresh raw dishes.

Toshi Sushi

6
181 16th Ave E, Vancouver, BC V5T 4R2

It’s not just the catchy name that makes locals and tourists alike return to this joint again and again – it’s the heavenly, ocean-friendly menu featuring some of the freshest fish around! As small as it is, snagging a table at Toshi Sushi may require a short (or long) wait, but in terms of leaving diners full and content, this place has got it down.

Minami Restaurant

7
1118 Mainland St, Vancouver, BC V6B 2T9

Another higher end option, this classy Yaletown favourite is sure to satisfy your cravings. Minami serves excellent aburi sushi and other traditional favourites, as well as several dishes you wouldn’t find at the typical local joint (like the delicious tuna tartar with miso, or wagyu beef soba). The culinary innovation here is undeniable, and can easily fill you up – but make sure to leave room for dessert!

Sushi Gallery

8
3772 10th Avenue W, Vancouver, BC V6R 2G4

There’s something about the brown rice at Shizen Ya that complements the Japanese flavours so perfectly. Is it the texture? The wholesomeness? Who knows! Often referred to as a healthier sushi option, this MSG-free joint uses locally sourced, organic ingredients in their wonderful creations, which include many vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. The drink list is quite impressive as well, which is always a plus.
