Wake up right at these Calgary breakfast spots

Calgary is a hard city in which to find an open restaurant table at breakfast time. And it’s not for lack of breakfast restaurants, but rather because Calgarians love their morning meal. Arrive early at these exceptional breakfast haunts.

OEB Breakfast

825 1 Ave Ne, Calgary, AB T2E 0C2

This Edmonton Trail breakfast juggernaut serves so many eggs, it operates its very own chicken farm. Its expansive menu features a selection of traditional one- and two-egg breakfasts and omelettes. Two poached eggs, Quebec cheese curds and bacon lardons feature in its signature Soul n’ a Bowl.

Red's Diner Ltd

1415 4 St SW, Calgary, AB T2R 0Y2

Short-rib hash and eggs, blueberry buckwheat buttermilk pancakes, steak and eggs: it’s all good at both Red’s locations. But you really ought to try the French toast stuffed with goat cheese, basil and blueberry. You won’t regret ordering a mimosa to go along with it.

Fine Diner The

500-12100 Macleod Trail Se, Calgary, AB T2J 7G9

You may have to spend a little time in line, but nabbing a seat at this Inglewood diner is a rich and rewarding experience. Its breakfast lineup is pure comfort cuisine times two, featuring notable entrees such as a cheesy croque madame, creamy lobster Benny and truffle-scented wild mushroom frittata.

Diner Deluxe

802 Edmonton Trail NE, Calgary, AB T2E 3J6

This Calgary breakfast institution features two locations. Its original Edmonton Trail location is paired with a more spacious spot in Aspen Landing. Mascarpone French toast, fried chicken and waffle, and barbecue pulled pork hash: if you like the sound of it, wait until you taste it!

Belmont Diner

19-2008 33 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB T2T 1Z4

Done up in authentic ’50s diner finery, the Belmont’s other great quality is its big, savoury breakfast dishes. The traditional breakfast with its endless toast and hash browns always satisfies. Also try the Montreal smoked meat hash topped with two soft-basted eggs and Breakfast on a Bun — the name says it all.

Galaxie Diner

1413 11 St SW, Calgary, AB T2R 1G7

This beltline breakfast spot is always elbow-to-elbow with hungry patrons eager to consume its hot-from-the-grill all-day morning meals. A tiny and true 1950s-style diner, its generous plates include traditional breakfast combos, French toast, omelets and scrambles. Accompanied by salsa, sour cream, the bestselling breakfast burrito is plump with scrambled eggs, melted cheese, mushrooms and onions plus bacon and beef. All meals are served with toast and/or hash browns.

The quintessential Mexican meal, tacos are also a relatively scarce commodity in Calgary. However, we’ve done some digging and unearthed the select few restaurants that make truly marvelous versions of these hand-held snacks.
The city’s summer season features a delicious dance card of culinary festivals and events. Many, such as Stampede-time pancake breakfasts, are easy to access the day of, but the various tasting and tippling shindigs listed here can fill up quickly, so purchasing tickets sooner than later for these foodie festivities is recommended. The city’s pathway system is one of the longest in North America. Given its lengthy stretches, the occasional rest and snack stop, though few and far between, are a welcome sight when walking, biking and inline skating. Here are a few restaurants, cafés and snack shacks located on or near our scenic cycling system. Image credit: iStock.com/mihailomilovanovic.
