Located in the heart of Kitsilano, Hi Nippon has been around for a while and they make some pretty darn good sushi. Another restaurant dedicated to using wild salmon Hi Nippon has all of the old standards plus a decent, if un-inventive, selection of specialty rolls. Overall this is a great place to get sushi. The non-sushi menu items are not the greatest. The tempura tends toward the greasy side and the teriyaki dishes are good but not great. Our little one, however, earnestly declares that the udon soup she had tonight was the best ever! The service tongith was excellent and timely and the teriyaki dishes arrived piping hot and well timed witht he sushi order. Visit Hi Nippon for your next sushi fix and you will leave satisfied! This little restaurant opened about a year or so ago and is now officially our favourite Japanese restaurant in the neighbourhood. The sushi is nothing short of amazing. An incredible selection of original roll creations is augmented by all of the favourites. What's best is they use wild salmon for their creations and obviously keep abreast of what is fresh at the market judging by their ever-changing special board. I had some wild hamachi sashimi there that just about made me swoon it was so amazing. The noodle soup is very flavourful as well and the only teeniest suggestion I could make would be to remove the skin from the chicken before plopping it into the soup. To top off your meal the tempura bananas and ice cream is not to be missed. The restaurant itself is what you would expect decor-wise but a neat and kitschy touch they include is customer testimonials posted all around the restaurant. The location in the heart of Main and the service also can't be beat. Truly some of the best sushi I've ever eaten. Read more

As you wander along Robson Street this is a popular Japanese restaurant that has been here for awhile. Reservations highly recommended. The assorted tempera was excellent, nicely battered, and we tried various appetizers such as gomae, liver, fried fish, clam soup, edaname, tofu, Saba shiroyaki, salmon belly. Their cheerful staff makes the contemporary local crowd feel at home in a dining room filled with West Coast-y interior. At the busy sushi bar, chefs create impressive platters of sashimi, occasionally apologizing for a less than perfect toro that is nonetheless much better quality than what we are used to consuming at many Robson sushi bars. A salad of spinach and enoki mushrooms is redolent of sesame oil, and yellowtail carpaccio is drizzled with red pepper-ponzu sauce. One can ask for his/her usual here, but Uni Tempura and the grilled sea bass with Saikyo miso are more interesting. Whimsical but traditional menu will keep many end up staying for late drinks. Some tips on rolls to try - the Sexy Mindy Roll, the Cherry Blossom and the Las Vegas Roll. Sometimes when you eat in the owner comes around and talks to you , which is nice as well.
