I had a dream about eating at this place last night, so I thought that I'd write a review! I've eaten at this place a handful of times and I've never had a bad experience...ever. I would go more often, but it's very out-of-the-way for me. I usually get the chicken burrito and free chips+homemade salsa are included. The meat is fresh and not dry like other places! Salsa is definitely not Old El Paso. Aside from the homemade and freshness of the food, what sets it apart is the non-chain decor and the friendliness of the staff. The atmosphere at El Sombrero really makes you feel as though you're somewhere else - as opposed to a strip mall in Mississauga. :) Again, I wish that they're open up a location south, closer to me, an actual sit-down restaurant with servers, and an extended menu will probably succeed as well since there aren't any Mexican restaurants nearby! I ended up at this restaurant today because I was craving a pork souvlaki but have been constantly disappointed by anything in Etobicoke. I found it on this site – there were so many over the top reviews that I thought they must be phony. However, once I read the review where someone had an argument with the owner over coleslaw juice getting on their fries and said they’d never go back (but admitted it was the best fish and chips in Toronto) I knew this place must be good. Well I didn’t have the fish and chips but WOW – I had the best pork souvlaki I’ve had in years. The Greek salad was simple with a really fresh dressing. I try to go to The Longest Yard once every week., and I have been since shortly after it opened. The staff and management are friendly and welcoming and the food is decently priced for the portion/quality you get. It's a 5 minute walk from Islington subway station so if you're planning on drinking, it definitely saves money on cab fare. If you drive, there's quite a bit of parking on Bloor and on Eagle (side street). They have one of the best burgers I've ever eaten, and the beef is organic. They have other options as well, though the menu isn't fully organic. Every day, they have specials for dinner. Fish and Chips tend to be a special on Friday and Sunday night, and it's really good. The added bonus for me is that I'm a Baseball fan and The Longest Yard is the only place I go to where even if there's playoff Hockey and Basketball on, at least one TV will have Baseball and I won't be told "Sorry, nobody wants to watch Baseball." It caters to the family as well as the Sports fans. I was there for the Superbowl and for the Olympic Gold Hockey match. It's not the type of place where people go to get completely drunk, loud, and obnoxious though people are drinking. They also have contests during big events where you can win prizes and even cash! DonDon Izakaya is Toronto's own little taste of Japan. I once visited Tokyo on a business trip, and I remember going to this strange thing called an "izakaya" on several occasions. I remember my first time: I didn't understand why we couldn't just order our own dishes or why it had to be so loud! But by the end of the night, after several decanters of sake had been shared among our group, it all just seemed perfect. DonDon kinda feels this way too. The food may not be gourmet, but it's a ton of fun to eat! (I've heard that we shouldn't expect high-quality foods from izakayas since they are more like pubs anyway!) And the atmosphere is spot on. Oh, and don't even get me started on the drinks. I fell in love with sake in Japan and we've been reunited at DonDon. I've only been to DonDon once, but I'll definitely be going back again! We shared a salad that was sublime. Every patron in the lunch seemed to be sharing our experience which included enjoying the waitresses body and looks. The inside of this restaurant is quintessential diner. The lady behind the bar was very friendly as was our server. The food came out quickly, hot, and fresh even though it was a busy time of the day. For the price, the sandwich was a little small but given the location so near to Yonge & Dundas I suppose higher prices should be expected. The huevos rancheros came with 2 eggs, a generous amount of black beans, avocado, and chorizo sausage as well as a delicious corn muffin.
