When you bring your baby home, you’ll need some advice on choosing the perfect baby mattress. So, now that you’ve painted and decorated the baby room, all you need is a place for your baby to have sweet dreams.

While many parents and soon-to-be parents painstakingly comb over their crib options, the decision on mattress is usually glazed over. This can be a mistake, because the mattress you choose can mean the difference between a sleepless or restful night. Take a look at some of your options.

Choosing a baby mattress: which type is best?

Spring mattresses

Spring mattresses are the most popular type. Like most mattresses for full-sized beds, spring mattresses contain coils, fabric and padding. This interior is responsible for giving your mattress its plushness. The coils inside the mattress also help support your baby as they keep growing and growing. With spring mattresses, you don’t have to worry about having to replace them, since they're very durable and last longer than other mattresses. An interesting fact about spring mattresses is that they regulate the flow of air, keeping your baby cool in warmer months so they don’t get too sweaty while they rest. These kinds of mattresses can get pricey.

Foam mattresses

If you’re concerned about your budget, you might want to get your baby a foam mattress. These mattresses are usually cheaper than spring or coil mattresses. Even so, there are benefits to getting your baby a foam mattress since they're made so that they can support your baby’s spine as they grow. This is important if you want your baby to have proper posture and strength.

Hypoallergenic mattresses

If you have less of a constraint on budget, you could consider a hypoallergenic mattress. These mattresses are deigned for babies with allergies to dust and other common allergens. The mattress comes with a cover that can be removed and washed. By washing the mattress cover, you’ll help kill the bacteria and allergens that can give your baby flare-ups.

Natural mattresses

While this type of mattress isn’t as common at stores that carry baby products, they are getting some attention. They are not as easily found, and can be pricier than popular options, but more and more parents are concerned about what's inside a product that has regular contact with babies. Natural mattresses usually contain a natural fibre like coconut fibre. This type allows some air to circulate while keeping its shape. If you plan on having another child in the future, this type of mattress is durable enough to be used as a hand-me-down.
