What to pack for a winter getaway

November 6, 2014

Whether it's a ski trip or a relaxing stay in a cabin in the woods, a winter getaway can be the ultimate vacation. Here are some tips to make sure you pack all the right things to stay warm and happy while you're away.

What to pack for a winter getaway

If you're coming from a cold environment, you already know the importance of layers. They are crucial for winter travel because you probably won't be close to your hotel at all times to stop and grab an extra sweatshirt or jacket for warmth. You definitely don't want to be stuck out in the cold for too long without the proper clothing. Bring long underwear, sweaters, vests, jackets, and extra snow gear if you're planning on doing any athletic activities. It's also advisable to pack waterproof jackets if you intend on spending a lot of time in the snow.

Protective accessories

Just like any vacation, you'll want to make sure you bring the necessary items to protect yourself. Sunscreen is important. Even though it's winter, the sun is still strong and can burn you, especially if you're in the mountains. You'll also want to bring a small first-aid kit with the necessary travel remedies such as motion sickness medicine, ibuprofen for pain relief, and bandages and ointments in case of cuts or blisters.

Whether you're taking an active trip or just planning on relaxing in a cozy cabin, it's a good idea to bring a few entertainment options. Pack a few books, and if your accommodations have a TV, some movies to watch while you're away. If you're going with a group, it can be fun to bring board games or playing cards as well.

Proper footwear

One of the easiest ways to ruin a winter vacation is neglecting to bring the proper footwear. Make sure to bring sturdy, weatherproof boots that won't get wet in the snow and will keep your feet warm even if temperatures drop. It's also a good idea to bring a light pair of shoes in case you need them for going to dinner or just walking around the hotel.
