It doesn't surprise former colleagues of Jesus Pena one bit that they now see him running a Mexican restaurant in downtown Oshawa. Before opening Viva Burritos in 2009, Jesus had worked as a computer system analyst for 23 years. Jesus’ love of his homeland's cuisine was evident in the delectable goodies he brought to the office. ‟I've always loved cooking and eating out,” says Jesus. ‟My former co-workers are now my customers. They say they remember me coming in at lunchtime with Mexican food to share.”
Jesus serves freshly prepared Northern Mexican takes on favourites such as burritos, tacos, quesadillas, tostadas, tortillas and soups. ‟I keep in touch with what’s going on with food in Mexico through family back home,” he says. ‟What I serve is what I grew up with.”
This is a great little family run business, I eat here at least twice a month, I've had everything on the menu and there always fresh, fresh, fresh. The owner never charges extra when i ask for guacamole or anything else on the side. The atmosphere is generally calm inside, occasionally there will be something interesting on the TV, he had Queen live on one day haha. not usually packed with people. In general a good place to grab a burrito or a Jarittos soda
Since my first experience there I have tryed to bring many people back with me. Lots of my friends and family were put off by the location(downtown Oshawa) but once they get past the gruff surroundings they are taken back by the excellent quality of this place. I've had everything on the menu, and a friend and I go there at least once every 10 days or so. These burritos are a force to be reckoned with. Great service, very friendly and very fast, just the way I like it. I hope this place stays around for a long, long time.
Watch out for that hot sauce, it's a killer! great food, best burrito I've had in years. It's good to see a place that has a very small menu to avoid complicating the awesome simplicity of this traditional mexican favorite.
I dropped by and tried both the carnitas (pulled pork) and the chorizo. Very tasty, and all of the toppings were ultra fresh. I happened to notice a small mountain of avocados in the kitchen, which explains why the guacamole was so fresh. Definitely does not disappoint, and hits the spot when you've got the craving for a nice burrito.
