Meet the owner

The Flying Yogi, Canada’s first suspension yoga studio, offers a variety of yoga classes on the YogiGym Suspension System, as well as workshops, holistic services and teacher training. The studio is family friendly, and visitors can expect to have fun exploring new yoga modalities that help strengthen and rebalance the body, mind and spirit.

Studio director and owner, Beatrix Montanile, discovered the therapeutic benefits of inversion therapy while suspending from ropes during a visit to India in 2008. She’d suffered from chronic back pain almost all of her life due to injuries sustained in childhood. After having been suspended only a few times, Beatrix was impressed by how much better she felt. Upon her return to Canada she continued to explore the many ways that yoga poses and other movement modalities could be advanced. Then, in 2011, she had the idea of establishing a base where more people could enjoy learning suspension yoga, and The Flying Yogi was born.

Suspension yoga draws on Beatrix’s extensive knowledge, experience and credentials in natural treatments and can benefit people with many different health issues. “Being upside down is a very natural state for our bodies to be in,” Beatrix says of the practice. “We are upside down in the womb and enter the world upside down and kids love hanging upside down on jungle gyms and moving through space doing cartwheels and somersaults. The adverse effects gravity has on the body and spinal column are well documented and hanging upside down for just a few minutes a day can help people substantially.” Beatrix says suspension yoga has helped her clients overcome chronic back pain, improve spinal mobility and elevate moods.

Beyond bringing suspension yoga to the Toronto community, Beatrix and her team have even inspired some practitioners to become instructors themselves. “Among our many courses, we also offer classes for people who want to become suspension yoga instructors,” Beatrix says. “I love that what I’ve built has created a community, including a community of teachers. From a social standpoint, from a health standpoint and from a creative standpoint, The Flying Yogi is very fulfilling.”
