Meet the owner

When The Lockhart opened in Little Portugal in September 2015, it was an instant hit as locals and visitors to the city were eager to experience a bar like this. It unexpectedly skyrocketed to fame from the get-go, which was a happy surprise to owners Matt Rocks, Matthew Laking and Paris Xerx.

“We wanted to open a fun cocktail bar with pop culture, magical references," says Matt who adds, “We were inspired by spells, apothecary, alchemy and all those things you associate with those worlds.” Both avid Harry Potter fans, they listened to the Stephen Frye narrated Harry Potter audio books while they spontaneously transformed and decorated the space previously home to a bar called Lucy Brock. The result is a fun, 35-seat restaurant and bar with a mashup of various eclectic elements.

Creative cocktails in Toronto

A Harry Potter-themed bar is bound to have some creative cocktails on the menu, but one stands out from the rest, and it’s the Campfire Old Fashioned. The cocktail is made with Wild Turkey 101, Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters, house- made marshmallow syrup, topped with chocolate syrup and toasted marshmallow with a graham cracker rim. All that’s missing is the fire.

The instantly famous Harry Potter inspired pub in Little Portugual made headlines when it opened in 2014. Refined in its nods to the international bestselling series (think: exposed brick interior, a potions and elixirs, and hidden references to the novels that only a true fan will notice). The “apothecary” offers a selection of scrumptious cocktails, but don’t forget to dabble in the delicious tapas on offer. The baked Brie paired with a flaming Bufuddlement draft never fails to please.

One of Dundas West’s newest cocktail bars is making waves in national news: a Harry Potter theme bar with subtle references to the fantasy series that will garner nods from fans (while the non-interested will see them simply as cute intricacies). Enjoy invented-in-house “potions and elixirs” aptly titled “Ludo’s debt” (lemon-infused gin, Lillet Blanc and Aperol) and “The Shacklebolt,” (a slight spin on the Dark ‘n’ Stormy), alongside dinner and snack fare like a puff-pastry baked brie, marinated poached prawns, mac ‘n’ cheese sliders, and gourmet popcorn.
