Long the domain of discount fabric stores and low-cost wedding dresses, the Plaza St-Hubert outdoor mall has been experiencing a renaissance of sorts since 2010, with the advent of small businesses like L'Armoire à glaces, an ice cream shop with original offerings. “At first, we carried Havre aux glaces’ products, but we felt the need to create our own unique flavours,” explains Nadia Aubert, who co-owns the shop with partner David Bureau. L'Armoire à glaces now sells its own original selections, including apple-calvados, maple-butter-bacon, piña colada and dark-chocolate-chipotle, year-round.

While homemade ice cream is this parlour’s specialty, it has also become known for a variety of dishes that can be enjoyed in all seasons. During the colder months, locals come to Nadia and David’s cozy store for the area’s best hot chocolate or a delectable grilled cheese made with a selection of typical Quebec cheeses. Cookies, pie from local bakery Rustique, soups, entrée salads and other seasonal specialties are also on hand to help beat the winter blues.

Cool off at Montreal’s best local ice cream shops

Cool off at Montreal’s best local ice cream shops

This friendly ice cream shop in Plaza St-Hubert offers not only addictively good ice cream, but also gelato and sorbet making workshops for children. You’re sure to find your flavour at this establishment, as are lactose intolerant folks, who will be pleasantly surprised with the selection available. While these details are all very nice, the real issue is whether you’ll dare to dip your cone in 55% dark chocolate or salted caramel.
