Meet the owner

Since 1999, Laïka has become an institution of Montreal. It was one of the first restaurants to function as a Wi-Fi hotspot, to incorporate DJ sets in the evenings and, outside of Spanish restaurants, to serve tapas dishes. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the formula for success achieved by owner Bruno Ricciardi-Rigault. “After 15 years, only five per cent of restaurants in Quebec are still open,” he says. “And we are still going strong.”

From 1995 to 1997, Bruno was involved in Usine C and enjoyed the idea of a multipurpose venue and meeting place. Remembering childhood visits to Paris, he was struck by the café culture there, which at the time seemed to be largely absent in Quebec. “I liked the idea of a place open morning to evening, where people could come at any time for a light meal, a coffee, a drink or a meeting.”

    I wouldn't say it's a good place for a formal meeting but when you need to get out of the office and into a more upbeat environment.
