Meet the owner

Upstairs Jazz bar opened in the mid 1980s on Bishop Street, and at the time, it really was upstairs. It was a popular student hangout and drew small crowds looking for a place to delight in the best of live jazz. The bar relocated to a lower level space on Mackay, keeping its name despite the move, and six month later, in 1995, passed into new hands.

Joel Giberovitch was a political science student and music lover who felt that Montreal was in need of a "serious" jazz bar. In Upstairs Jazz Bar he saw his opportunity and became the proud owner along with his father, a restaurant veteran. As his plans for Upstairs began to crystallize, Joel travelled to New York City, visiting jazz club after jazz club for inspiration.

"Jazz is a throwback to what was when," says Joel. "It’s part of North American history. It’s great music that transcends every emotion and every mood." So Joel set out to combine jazz club with music hall and create a place where jazz lovers - and everyone else - could come to delight in and discover the best of jazz right near Montreal’s downtown core.
