I visited last night for the first time for a friends birthday party I have to say the atmosphere was very nice the food was good the only downfall being a disabled person is with the washrooms be in downstairs. The first thing i notice when i walked into POGUE MAHONES was that all the waitresses wore plaid thigh-length skirts - i am glad i arrived here! It is a kind of dark place with dark wood all over. Also it is a very busy and noisy place, i can barely hear myself talking. The waiters/waitresses were very attentive as they came back every once in awhile to check on our needs a few times. All of our food arrive fresh and hot. My coffee was fresh and scalding hot, it came in a generous sized mug too. My seafood chowder was hot and it was very creamy, not bad! My chicken wings were satisfactory, no complaints here! Okay now my Grand Spuds with irish-poutine-style sucked!!! The fries had melted cheese and gravy on top, but the freshcut homemade fries, tasted totally off. My friend who had fries in his dish also complained about the fries tasting YUCK! My other friends were very satisfied with their dishes (fish n chips, liver n onions w mashed potato, chicken pot pie w mashed potatoes, jambalaya). After a movie date we were trying to get into one of the places beside the movie theatre but the wait was too long. One of the party suggested the Galway Arms close by. I've never been and I surprised to have a place with good food, service and atmosphere in the area that I hadn't heard of. And I hear its been there for 20 years too!!! We all ordered something different from the menu so we could try different things. Nachos to start - nice big portion with lots of veggies and with lots of cheese. We discovered that the Irish Stew, Shephards Pie, Burgers and Steak and Mushroom Pie were all homemade - so different from the ones you get elsewhere and you could choose if you wanted fries, salad, mashed potatoes or soup with your order. I had the Louisiana Chicken Wrap which was very tasty but its a very large portion so you'll have lunch for tomorrow. Everything was hot and really good and large enough that some of us took leftovers home. Those that didn't cleared our plates!!!!! We were divided on the fries as not all of us were big fans of the hand cut fries but those that did like them loved them - soaked in vinegar. Our server remembered everything (including all of the weird requests) without writing it down and everything came out exactly as ordered. She gave us very prompt service and was naturally friendly to us and even took time to talk to one of the guys who was thinking of a trip to Ireland by telling him when the flights would be cheaper, ideal times to visit, places in Dublin to visit etc. We've decided to make this our after movie treat from now on and look forward to the patio in the summer.
