With the various dyes and products required, it’s rare to find a hair salon that is also environmentally aware, but The Beauty Parlour has put eco-consciousness at the crux of their philosophy.

Owner Desiree Liley came up with the concept after noticing some stylists were having reactions to the products they were using. With this in mind, she went full-bore into designing and constructing the salon using recycled materials. “The floorboards came from an old grain elevator, the desks were used, the chairs were used, the only new things were the mirrors,” says manager Reanne Bachand.

In the competitive hair-salon industry, where hundreds of salons are vying for the same heads of hair, The Beauty Parlour has carved out a niche market with their eco-friendly focus. They provide select organic products that are kind to the Earth and to their clients’ hair. “We just keep true to making sure that we always have the right ingredients,” says Reanne. “It’s hard, but it’s worth it because the clientele we have is awesome.” Their clients are a mix of young and old, but all have the same appreciation for what the company is doing.

    Excellent!

    My regular hairdresser had gone on maternity leave, so I was searching for a new stylist. Reviews on Yelp for The Beauty Parlour were great, so I decided to give it a try. From the moment you walk in the entire atmosphere (music, decor, etc.) have an incredibly calming effect. Parking wasn't an issue, and it's at the beginning of Whyte Ave before you start running into a lot of traffic. Aspen, the manager, was very efficient, polite, and welcomed me right away. My stylist, Alysha, listened to what I wanted, made some great suggestions for cut, colour, and styling techniques, made me feel very comfortable (latte.. yes please! Scalp massage... thank you!!) and did a fantastic job on my hair. As well, the products are sulphate, paraben, and ammonia free. Great news for pregnant ladies and anyone trying to live a less toxic lifestyle! They still work great; in fact, the hair products I left with work better than any other high end items I've purchased in the past, and smell amazing! I left extremely relaxed and happy with the overall experience. I will definitely be back, and would recommend this salon to anyone.

    Not only are the products here eco-chic, but the salon itself is also made from sustainable products, including the floors, which are made from repurposed wood from old Alberta grain elevators. The chairs where you sit to have your hair blow-dried are vintage, and the chandeliers are from a thrift store. While the salon isn’t 100 per cent organic, they do offer paraben-free products, such as Kevin Murphy, and ammonia-free colour lines, such as Koko.
