Comfort and refinement are the standards at Zinc and it is evident right down to the very clothes a server wears: Jeans paired with a dark, pressed collar shirt. Executive Chef David Omar says he wants to meld these concepts together when customers come to the restaurant. In a way, this fusing of ideas began in more humble settings in NewBrunswick. “I grew up on a small farm,”says David. “I had no interest in [food] whatsoever. I liked eating with a great passion. But I wanted to be a math teacher.”

It was a long journey that led him to one of Edmonton’s busiest kitchens, but he has no regrets about his choices. And the kitchen’s a great place to escape, especially during the winter. “You should be a chef because we’re experiencing 30- degree temperature in the kitchen," jokes David.

A friend and I took advantage of Tapas Night just prior to a symphony concert nearby. We were delighted with the hospitality—they even upped the lighting in consideration of our elderly menu-reading eyes—service was prompt, premises were clean and attractive, staff were friendly and generous without being intrusive — and the food was delicious. Next time we plan to stay longer! And eat more!

Disappointing

Chef seems to be trying too hard blending flavors that do not work (kalamata olive ice cream) and presentation is poor (trout is served in tin foil head/tail/skin on) service is poor bordering on rude. If I am going to spend $100 per person there are places that deliver quality service/food and value, this is not one of those places.

Edmonton spots with desserts good enough to eat for dinner

Edmonton spots with desserts good enough to eat for dinner

For years, I was never a believer in bread pudding – I thought, “Who eats bread for dessert?” and always chose chocolate over it. That was until I was served the banana bread pudding from Zinc at a Christmas party, where I ate not one, but two of them! The soft, creamy texture of this dessert coupled with the flavour of banana was wonderful, and a truly magical experience!

Located in the Art Gallery of Alberta, Zinc is close to the action of the Citadel Theatre and the Winspear Centre, not to mention events being held at the gallery itself. Their elegant menu is influenced by the different displays of art at the gallery, and the chef uses locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible.

Fantastic places for downtown drinks in Edmonton

Fantastic places for downtown drinks in Edmonton

Located inside the Art Gallery of Alberta, this restaurant is ideal for enjoying a bottle of wine after checking out an exhibit or seeing a show at the nearby Winspear Centre or Citadel Theatre. Zinc is big on wine – their list of wine available by the bottle is six pages long and broken down not only by sparkling, red and white but also by Old World and New World varieties.
