H.R. MacMillan Space Centre’s surroundings provide a clue to the visionary, futuristic wonder inside. Since 1968, the iconic building’s spaceship-like proportions are matched in character by the six-metre tall, stainless steel crab guarding it, with pincers raised to the heavens. It’s both jolly and impressive: an apt summary of the Space Centre itself. A not-for-profit organization dedicated to education, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre offers a range of exhibitions, workshops and events to promote science knowledge to adults and children alike.

“We want to make science accessible to everyone — not just to those who already have an interest,” says Lyndsey Barton, director of community engagement with the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre. “We try to make everything fun and entertaining… and slip some learning in along the way! Most visitors leave encouraged to think more about the world around them.”

Kid-friendly Vancouver museums for the whole family

Kid-friendly Vancouver museums for the whole family

The planetarium is the main attraction at this particular museum, located just next door to Museum of Vancouver. Although small and dark, the planetarium theatre shows are impressive and exciting for children of all ages. There are rarely many people here, so it's a good place to escape the tourists that fill Vancouver during summer. The space exhibits on the main floor are almost all interactive, and the fact you don't have to beat out other people to get a turn means you can spend more time having fun. Make sure you touch the moon rock while you're here.

The astronomy geek who would rather not feel tiny gazing out at the vast universe might appreciate having a star dedicated to him. The H.R. MacMillan’s Space Centre’s Point of Light Star Dedication Program allows you to pay tribute by making donations ranging from $50 to $500. The larger the donation, the brighter the star.

Vancouver’s must-see tourist attractions

Vancouver’s must-see tourist attractions

You might say this tourist attraction is out of this world. Founded in 1968, the Space Centre is an astronomy museum that features live presentations and an array of exhibits on all things celestial. It’s also home to the famous Planetarium Star Theatre, which offers some mind-blowing educational entertainment, and presents late-night laser shows for those of a psychedelic bent.
