Meet the owner

Enter Boutique Unicorn and you will find an all-white space filled with women’s clothes of solid and dominant colours such as black, white and navy. It conveys a clear vision of sophistication, class and trend, but the initial vision of storeowners Amelie Thellen and Melanie Robillard has actually come a long way.

When it first opened its doors in September 2008, Boutique Unicorn carried a mix of brands, imported and local. In the end, however, it was the local Canadian and Quebec brands that prevailed and what has made the boutique such a unique shopping destination today. Over 80 per cent of the merchandise sold at Boutique Unicorn is made in Montreal and includes local Quebec brands such as Betina Lou, Eve Gravel and Melissa Nepton.

“We had a couple of Quebec lines and that’s what was working the best, so we turned towards Quebec and Canadian design,” Amelie says. Despite being asked many times in the past if they will ever introduce menswear, Amelie says she's sticking to what she knows best and what she is most passionate about, which is womenswear. She and Melanie are also passionate about home décor, which Boutique Unicorn also carries.

Amelie says she loves having a boutique in Montreal because of the area's eclectic fashion scene and mix of styles. “The Montreal fashion scene is very eclectic, there isn’t just one style. It’s fun! We have all kinds of clients and we still manage to satisfy all the different tastes,” Amelie says.
