Sweet summer sangrias for sipping in Edmonton

While the origins of sangria remain mysterious, and the exact ingredient list flexible, everyone can agree on one thing: It’s an absolutely exquisite drink that almost everyone enjoys. Whether you prefer red or white, with brandy or triple sec, berries or citrus fruit, there is delicious sangria out there for you to sip at a restaurant in Edmonton.

Sabor Divino

109-10220 103 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 0Y8

The sangria at this European eatery is available by the glass or pitcher, so you can sip sangria even if no one else at your table wants it (they may change their minds after they see how much you enjoy yours). The bar staff creates two different versions of their lovely sangria – the traditional house recipe, or topped with sparkling cava. Both are incredible, but there is something truly decadent about a drink that is effervescent.

Chop Steakhouse & Bar

10111 Ellerslie Rd SW, Edmonton, AB T6X 0J3

You may think that sangria and steak is a weird combination but you would be wrong – the beauty of sangria is that it goes with everything. This steakhouse sets out to prove that with their heavenly sangria. The white sangria is a delightfully refreshing mix of Moscato wine, brandy, fresh fruit and citrus. They also offer red sangria, which consists of Grenache red wine and fruit muddled with brandy.

Rostizado

102-10359 104 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 1B9

Owned by the same people behind Tres Carnales, Rostizado is a Mexican restaurant known for its homestyle platters of slow-roasted meats. It also serves up a mean sangria. The cava sangria is a blend of tequila blanco (a bold-tasting tequila that is un-aged or aged less than two months), Cointreau and fresh lime. This refreshing take on a classic drink comes by the glass, and is a lovely complement to ceviche, tamales, gorditas or roast chicken.

Joey Restaurants

11228 Jasper Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5K 2V2

Their summer sangria is a blend of red or white wine with Spanish brandy, fruit juices and fresh fruit. Three-and-a-half ounces of alcohol will cost you only $7.50, making it a bargain. And, on Saturdays, sangria is on special for $6 a pop — which is amazing, considering how delicious it is. The fruit flavours really stand out, making it taste sweet and fresh without being too saccharine.

Cactus Club Cafe

11150 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, AB T5K 2V2

For something insanely refreshing, try their signature sangria. It comes made with fresh raspberries and strawberries mixed with zinfandel, apricot brandy, Sprite and a splash of Bellini slush. And, on Saturdays, it’s the feature drink, so it’s $1 cheaper than normal – and nothing quite says welcome to Saturday quite like a glass of sangria, or two.

Fairmont Hotel Macdonald

6
10065 100th Street, EDMONTON, AB T5J 0N6

With one of the most gorgeous patios in the city, it’s no surprise that the Confederation Lounge at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald is so good at mixing up a summer staple like sangria. The bartender creates red and white sangria, but combines three wines for each. The red includes a blend of merlot, syrah and pinot noir for a slightly spicy sangria. The white wine mix is sauvignon blanc, pinot gris and chardonnay. Each kind is blended with lemon juice, orange bitters, sugar and soda water, then steeped with fresh lemon, lime and orange.

Sugar Bowl Coffee & Juice Bar

10922 88 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6G 0Z1

The sangria here is simple but pleasant. It comes by the glass, and contains orange juice, red wine, citrus fruit and Triple Sec. At only $7.50 for two ounces of alcohol, it’s a steal of a deal. And, it tastes like summer in a glass, so enjoy it on the Sugar Bowl’s delightful outdoor patio while basking in some sweet summer sunshine.
