One of the most common misconceptions about martial arts is that classes are designed to teach individuals to become good fighters. While students do become skilled at sparring, Master Phan, the owner of Tri-City Taekwondo, says it’s more of a by-product on the way to the real lessons.
“I would say we start with respect and build from there,” he says. “We also instil confidence so you have respect, confidence and self-control in the decisions you make in your life. You learn to stand up for yourself…and handle situations with proper moves instead of aggressiveness.”
While new students may be eager to master roundhouse kicks or flying side-kicks, Master Phan warns the process takes time and patience. Students must first build a mental foundation before they learn physical skills. “The first thing we show them is how to respect and how to focus,” he says.
