Meet the owner

“How do you make a murder mystery into a restaurant?” asks Claire Wyrostok. Claire, owner of the Twin Peaks-inspired bar The Black Lodge, has answered her question as well as anyone on the Pacific Northwest. In 2013, Claire and co-founder Matt Krysko took a long-vacant space on Kingsway and transformed it into a cozy cabin-like space. Their friend Shane built a cabin feature for the bar, and Matt’s cousin made tables out of a massive cottonwood tree in his backyard. Claire, whose parents lived in Inuvik for two decades, brought in vintage Canadiana to decorate the walls and bar.

They originally named the bar The Cabin, but the City said the name was a no go, so they took the name The Black Lodge and started rolling with the Twin Peaks theme.

Right away, having dinner and a drink at The Black Lodge became a sort of pilgrimage for the show’s fans. “People will travel all across the United States to Snoqualmie Falls [featured in the show’s opening credits], and then they’ll come up to see us, which is the most flattering and amazing thing,” says Claire. Due to popular demand, they introduced cherry pie to the menu a few months after The Black Lodge opened.

One-of-a-kind activities in Vancouver

One-of-a-kind activities in Vancouver

A night out at Black Lodge is unlike any other. It might be hard to picture what a Twin Peaks themed bar looks like, but you’ll get the idea pretty quickly. Saddle up at the four-seater bar and Laura Palmer’s prom picture watches over you. Hit the can and you’ll find yourself in an eerie replica of the infamous Red Room. And the general vibe in the cabin-like venue is that of a forested, mountain town in Washington. It’s the perfect setting to tuck in and enjoy eats off the all-vegetarian menu (especially the hot dogs) and reasonably priced drinks.

Vegan-friendly restaurants in Vancouver

Vegan-friendly restaurants in Vancouver

Twin Peaks fans will love this subtly themed restaurant, whether they like meat or not. While the comfort food menu is vegetarian, just about everything can be veganized. Order one of the many hot dog dishes or opt for a sandwich. The only issue here is that you may have to wait for a table, as the neighbourhood hotspot is fairly small in size.

Fabulous frankfurters: Hot dogs in Vancouver

Fabulous frankfurters: Hot dogs in Vancouver

It’s hard to resist the strange allure of the ‘90s cult classic TV show Twin Peaks. That there is a bar on Kingsway that pays homage to the legacy of Laura Palmer, Agent Dale Cooper and the rest of the odd characters and their small, Washington town, is a testament to the show’s lasting appeal. The twist here is that the food is vegetarian, and that includes the John Candy Dog, an unusual but successful combo of dog topped with cream cheese, caramelized onion, sauerkraut and dried coconut. The hot dogs are not what they seem.
