    A pleasant surprise

This was my second stay at the Bavarian Inn and the second trip where I've dined at the Inn's restaurant. This visit I stayed for two nights and ate downstairs both visits. The new owners have added to their Indian menu (which I suggested they do the last time I visited a year ago), and they have even recently acquired a clay oven. The naan bread was just as good as many of the Indian restaurants I've been to in Toronto, very fresh and moist. I had the chicken biryani for dinner the first night. While it wasn't as spicy as I normally like, I figured this is because many of the clientele may not have had Indian food before and might not be used to spicy foods. The chicken was tender and the sauce was clearly homemade. I enquired with the owner when he came by the table and he mentioned that he would be happy to make any of the dishes spicier. Indeed, the second night I stayed at the Inn I went to the restaurant again and ordered the chicken curry. Although the waitress wasn't sure what type of curry was, she summoned the owner over, who was able to explain that he could customize the dish for me. He added some garam masala to spice it up and I guarantee that the food here was just as good as many nice Indian restaurants in Toronto. The proprietor is clearly dedicated to ensuring that diners have a good experience if they are willing to branch out and try the Indian menu. To top it off, the restaurant also serves a fantastic brand of German beer on draught (Hacker-Pschorr). All in all a great little restaurant, definitely worth stopping in on your travels along Highway 17. This restaurant would do well in the big city, but is an absolute gem to find in this corner of the culinary universe.

Restaurant food is overpriced, management is awful to deal with

I see that the reviews are positive for this restaurant so far. Note that the management has since changed and things are a bit different. We went there the other night to try out their new Indian menu and were all unpleasantly surprised. The food was bland - aside from the chickpea dish that tasted of dish soap - and the chicken was far from cooked. It also seems that most of the food was being reheated with a microwave. I have concluded this because we heard what sounded like a microwave being used extensively in the back and the waitress/day manager mentioned that the cooks were not in and she doesn't yet know how to make the food (she also mentioned that she hasn't tried any of the food... strange?) As you walk into the restaurant you may notice a sign posted by the front door reading, "If you are satisfied tell others. If you are not satisfied tell us". This line is not taken very seriously at the Bavarian. By the time our supper arrived it was around 7:30pm. We had all either worked all day or not eaten since lunch, so were famished. Yes, we ate the food presented to us as we saw slim chances of getting a quick meal elsewhere in this small town. Upon finishing, however, we brought up our disappointment with what turned out to be a $100+ meal. This was not dealt with gracefully. The waitress/day manager fired back with an attitude of, "well you ate it, so pay up and carry on". I'm not sure they yet understand how customer dissatisfaction can affect a place's reputation. There was a time when this Inn offered delicious food for a good price. Those days are behind them. Interestingly enough, there is an Indian restaurant just up the highway from the Bavarian. I haven't tried it yet, but it could not possibly be any worse.
