    Great little place

Great spring rolls and nice choice of dishes. Crispy orange chicken was simple but very good. Great wait staff and a simple but nice atmosphere. I will definitely be back there.

    What's the hype?

The spring rolls are really delicious The wine selection by glass is very limited. I had a chicken stirfry with rice ( very little) and It was just a normal run of the mill dish. My friend Had Pho and it was adequate.

    Surprise Party Success!

This is my second review for Red Basil, and I am happy to report that I am impressed as ever! On this occasion, my husband and I hosted a surprise party for my Mom for her 60th birthday, as the restaurant is a favourite of hers (and mine!) The kitchen manager, Tri, was incredibly accomodating throughout the planning. There were about 35 of us, and he allowed us to reserve the back section of the restaurant (well over half the tables in the place) despite the party being on a Saturday night. I was also able to come in earlier in the day to put up decorations, and the staff assisted me which I thought was nice of them. Food: I requested for everyone to be served appetizers of Fried Spring Rolls and Mango Salad with Chicken and Shrimp - Mom's favourite. These were served "family style" (and at a reasonable price) and everyone LOVED them both! I have had both before and I have to say the Spring Rolls were even better than I remembered them to be, and the Mango Salad was top notch as always. Most people then ordered an entree from the menu, and quite a variety of dishes were ordered. When I (later) asked around, only one guest said that their entree was just "okay" and everyone else RAVED about theirs! With a party of this size, I would say that is about as close to a "home run" in the food department as you can get! Of course, I do not recall what each person ordered, but two of the more popular choices were the Pad Thai and the Crispy Duck - both excellent by all accounts. Service was excellent from our two waitresses. Everything was served with perfect timing - when a bottle of wine or plate of appetizers was finished, another seemed to magically appear! The time between apps and entrees was just long enough for everyone to socialize. No one waited too long for a drink, and everything was cleared away promptly when it was finished. They also gladly (and without any service charge) served the cake we had brought, even though I had said I would be more than happy to do it myself as I did not purchase the cake from the restaurant. I appreciated that, as it was nice to have that extra bit of time to visit with friends and family. Tri was on hand throughout the evening to make sure that everything was going well and that everyone was happy. Thank you Tri and everyone at Red Basil for making my Mom's birthday a special and memorable night - we will continue to be customers for life! And yes, Mom was VERY surprised, and VERY happy!

    ordered out..not impressed

This was my second time ordering from Red Basil and putting a call into pick up their Yellow Curry. Not a terribly hard dish to make myself. I was dissapointed because there were a big chucks of green pepper and carrot that were on the raw side. Not a a lot of rice and when I got into my car, no napkins or cutlery. I've dined in and it was okay, but for the price I paid, this wasn't a great meal. Heads up on the take out situation at Red Basil.

    Authentic and very high quality

This make all others in the area jealous with the incredible level of input quality found in the creations here. The curry is just right with a nice mix of veg an no cheap stuff tossed in. When you find a favorite food style and you over visit, it can become out of fashion quickly. Not here. This is top shelf. Pay a bit more but just like fine wine the extra 4 bucks (for these dishes) is so worth it. A weekly destination for us.

Good food, good value for the $

This is one of my Mother's favourite restaurants. On this occasion, I took her in celebration of her birthday. Having been before, we had some idea of what dishes we enjoyed best. We shared a Mango salad (fantastic!) and Pad Thai, which they were more than happy to customize for us (made spicy and with chicken AND shrimp, on the menu it comes with only one meat choice) it was absolutely incredible! On the recommendation of our very nice waitress, we also shared some spring rolls (the deep-fried ones) which were also good, although the least 'memorable' part of the meal. Portion sizes are good, more than we were able to finish but my fiance sure enjoyed the leftovers! We also shared a 1/2 litre of white wine - not sure what kind as it was also chosen by the waitress based both on our description of what we liked and what they had in stock - but we both enoyed it! All in all, the Red Basil is not overly fancy, but it is clean (including the washrooms!) and has good food with friendly service, at a decent price...pretty much everything one would look for when looking for a casual dining experience, IMO. The total bill was $51, before tip but including tax and the 1/2 L of wine! I have (regretfully) spent much more on less satisfying meals elsewhere... I left $20 for the waitress as she did a truly excellent job and made us feel very welcome and not rushed in any way despite the fact that they were clearly closed by the time were finishing our meal. We will most certainly be back again, and would recommend it to others as well!
