Memories

I grew up in this small town many years ago--Wagon Wheel was my favourite place to get a giant plate of fries and gravy to share with my friends--I loved the old-time diner atmosphere, the nose of clashing plates and the swinging door leading to the kitchen. I recently went back with my cousin who shares some of those memories--and we had a great time reminiscing. Our server was very nice, and it was clear that the other guests were pleased with her outgoing and cheerful attitude--she was quick to get us menus, waited a good time to take our order, and left us to our conversation checking on us from time to time to make sure we were pleased with our order. The danger of our outing that day is as the saying goes--you can go back to the place, but you can't go back to the time..... Wagon Wheel has updated some of the interior of the restaurant displaying local art (which is great) and they have replaced the two booths which had vinyl seating with regular chairs. It is quite small in there so there are few tables. The T.V IS in the same place as I remember from visits in my younger years. The food was good--but nothing in particular stood out. I did miss the thick cut fries and the thick, deep brown gravy of my past, but I realize times have changed (and so have the owners). But I'm really happy that the name has stayed the same. Go to Wagon Wheel if you are in Cookstown a) because it is iconic--it's been there for a very, very long time b) the food is good, and priced right and c) If you have kids and do not want to take them to a pub when you are passing through. Remember to bring cash or stop at the RBC ATM across the street. Enjoy.
