Best Thai in Niagara

We quite enjoy the food at this restaurant and have visited most of the Thai restaurants in the Niagara Region (excepting some of the run-down older ones). The food is exceptional and the prices are fair. The restaurant is not big and is very busy from Thurs through Sat. Certainly call for reservations. Also note that parking is difficult as the lot is so small and shared with the Busy Bee Variety.

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!

So a little background, I have been to Chang Noi's about 40 times, and the food is above average for Thai food in the Niagara region, about average when compared to the GTA. I have never really had a problem with service until I decided to try a takeout order. It started off by me heading to the restaurant to try and get a table, they said they were busy which is understandable on a Saturday night. So I went with a takeout order. The guy behind the counter took my order, I paid, took my receipt and headed home with him saying that they would call me when the food is ready. Here is where the issues started, about an hour later I was still waiting to hear back about my food being ready. A tad bit upset I headed to the restaurant only to find that my order had been sitting there for ~30 minutes based on how cold the food was when I got home. The worst was yet to come when I unpacked the food and it turns out one of the 3 dishes I ordered was completely wrong. I called immediately to let them know about my dissatisfaction with the service not only with them switching up my order but also not even calling me about my order being ready. They nonchalantly passed on even apologizing for the mix up and proceeded to tell me there was nothing they could do. The jist of it is that after about 20 minutes on the phone they basically came back with there was nothing they would do. So to sum it up, screw Chang Noi's and I'm never going to return. Enjoy and please regret your decision not to even acknowledge your mistake.

Last review did not come up. # 11 visit like the rest! Did not make reservations for a thursday evening ;walked in. The resaurant was full [all ways a good sign] ;short wait .Both my wife and I enjoyed everything as all the other visits! One wonders what the detractors expect? Poor service is not usually the fault of the owner; people may not show up for work at the last minute etc. Watch the the heat! start at #2 and work up;

Fast and delicious Thai take-out

We get take-out from Chang Noi's a couple times a month. The quality of the food is very consistent and we have only been disappointed with the food maybe 2 times out of the last 30 take-out orders. The tamarind beef, green curry, red curry, calamari, they're all delicious. I do prefer the panang from Sahla Thai and both Sahla Thai and Spicy Thai are excellent choices as well for Thai food. We're quite lucky overall with the offerings in St. Catharines. I can't speak to the service for eating in as we only dined in once, thai food holds up well over the 6 minute drive home from Chang Noi's. Definitely recommended.

Bland

The food was bland. Really bland. The cashew chicken was more like chicken in super sweet orange sauce with no balance of flavours. The service was terribly inattentive. And they charge for rice.

Best Curry Ever!

Let me start by saying I have eaten A LOT of thai food, all across North America. So when I had heard some real good things about Chang Noi's from my boss and some friends I knew i had to try it. They more than lived up to their reviews! I had the level five red curry and the Thai sticky rice. The curry had wonderful heat (far surpasses any other in this area!) with out covering up the tons of flavor and excellent texture. The rice was perfectly cooked, SUPER sticky, and complemented the curry exactly as it should! The free can of pop was nice too. I would highly recommend this restaurant to any one for their first Thai experience, or a Thai lover like my self, It will not be your last!

Time for Thai by Lynn Ogryzlo

For tasty Asian cuisine, there’s nothing like the real thing Thai food is excitingly engaging, brilliantly clear and delightfully delicious, yet few of us really know what it’s all about. On the menu you'll find traditional dishes such as Tom Yum (lemongrass soup) and Pad Thai - not so surprising you say? What is surprising is that there are both authentic and Canadianized versions. I ordered both versions of the Tom Yum to compare and, wow, what a difference. The authentic version had elegant, lively flavours that brightened the palate with a sudden flavour surprise from the tomato, mushroom and shrimp. The fresh flavours awakened the palate in one of those eye-popping moments that make you stop, take notice and share the discovery with your dining partners. Personally, when I want Thai food, I want the real thing. Thai cuisine is unique in the world of Asian cuisine because it’s filled with bright, fresh flavours that can have both lime juice and bird eye chili in one mouthful. It’s one of the world’s emotional and stunning cuisines. Chang Noi means little or baby elephant and a Thai symbol of good fortune. After each meal your’re presented with a small gold leaf square that you use to cover the elephant that sits by the front door. Go to Chang Noi and enjoy some amazingly fantastic Thai food and cover the elephant giving Usa and Ku good fortune in their country. Lynn Ogryzlo writes for Niagara this Week and Niagara Life Magazine. She is the international award winning author of Niagara cooks, a farm to table cookbook.

Chang Noi's brings Authentic Thai to Niagara

Tucked away in a small commercial plaza located on a busy St. Catharines thoroughfare lies a gem of a restaurant just waiting to be discovered. The atmosphere at Chang Noi is one of calm, casual elegance with splashes of red and gold to contrast the warm wood tones. Chang Noi's signature elephant motif, complete with chef headgear, emblazons the menu and elephant figurines are proudly displayed around the restaurant. There is also a classy, intimate dining room, separated by sliding glass doors, that is suitable for small groups. We get off to a fine start with “Chang Noi’s Jan Yai.” This platter of appetizers ($12.95) includes fresh, minty garden salad rolls stuffed with fresh vegetables, moist and tender chicken satay, light and springy golden–fried tofu, crunchy spring rolls, and wide rings of calamari that have been coated in a delicate tempura–like batter and flash fried to perfection. Chang Noi’s spice–o–meter consists of five levels of heat ranging from mild to “Passport to Thailand.” Dessert comes in the form of creamy, rich coconut ice cream ($3.50) and banana fritters with ice cream ($4.95). I recommend the fritters for the thin, crispy exterior that encases warm bananas and a sweet honey glaze. By Mike Lowe, Pulse Niagara

This was, hands down, the worst service that we have ever received at a restaurant. Things started off great, but quickly went downhill when it was apparent that the staff did not have the capacity to service a full restaurant. Without going into too much detail, the following basically summed up our experience. 1. 25 minutes to order dinner 2. 6 out of 7 received their meal. Assumed the 7the meal was on its way. When it was obvious that it wasn't, it took the guest to flag down the waiter to notify him. He left to speak with Usa, owner & never came back to advise the guest when & if the dish was coming out. Guest had to go to the counter to speak to Usa to ask about the food. By this time, the remaining guest had finished their meal. 3. Two members of the party had to go to the bar on two separate occasions to get pitchers of water for the table 4. After forgetting the meal, the waiter gave up on our table - didn't ask if we wanted any drinks, if we needed anything else, didn't ask if we wanted any desert or take out boxes and left us with dirty plates. It took 20 minutes before we realized that he was never going to come back and one of the guest finally had to asked for the bill. By this time, the restaurant had one other table. 5. The 'forgotten' meal was actually billed including the side rice and the guest was given a 10% off next visit comp. 6. Most of these issues were minor and could have easily been remedied if the owner and waiter offered their sincere apologies and provided service to the table like any other guests. Instead, they did the opposite and ignored the table and allowed for seven guests leave on a negative note. Not good for word of mouth business. A mistake in this industry is not unusual, it's how you handle the situation that keeps their guest returning. These people need to take a course in Customer Service 101. Overall, very, very disappointed. The dishes were good, but unfortunately, it does not make up for horrible service. Not recommended for parties of 6 or more as it seems to cripple the establishment.

"Delicate" sums up my wife's and my impression of Chang Noi's. Opened in October, 2009, the place has an inviting taste of freshness to it. The décor suggests a $20 lunch, but our cost $12.50 per person. There are only three basic lunch choices, but they vary by day of the week. Our food was delicious and elegantly presented.,We loved the lemon-grass tea With 99 items on the overall menu, there's a lot to choose from. The service is prompt and orientally deferential. The music was colourless pop piano, an endless loop repeated every few minutes, but mercifully soft. Dinner is cash-only. Chang Noi's offers takeout too.

I have invited family, friends and business associates to experience the wonderful service and awesome food/beverages at Chang Noi's Thai Cuisine! Everyone loves it!! Usa and Ku have even managed to enlist my two young daughters as recurring guests. Each time we visit, we learn something new about Thai culture. Since we don't have a lot of experience with a Thai menu, we always ask Usa to help us decide what to order. We have been pleasantly surprised each time!!

We decided to try Chang Noi's on a friend's recommendation. Ordered takeout. While we were waiting, a waitress brought us delicious ginger tea for free--so unexpected and thoughtful. We usually order thai from Sahla Thai or Spicy Thai but we're now converted to this place. Food was so tasty and just beautiful to look at (even in its takeout container). The cook seems to take a lot of pride in his (or her) food! Will definitely be going back to try out some other dishes on the menu.
