Meet the owner

Much like the name of his bar, Nigel French is straight to the point, at least when talking about his decision to open the popular Queen Street West locale. “We were tired of working for people and we had talked about opening a bar, and then we just did,” he says, mentioning his co-owners and friends, Vincent Ng and Ginny Tam.

There was no elaborate, inspirational idea behind the late-night Asian-fusion snack bar that informed its mood or look. More so, Nigel explains, Food & Liquor is the “kind of place that I would want to go to.”

After working in restaurants for more than 25 years between the two of them, he and Vincent “wanted to start small,” rather than diving right into the restaurant industry. But with crowds of regulars returning for the bar’s dumplings and casual atmosphere, “small” doesn’t quite capture Food & Liquor’s considerable appeal.
