Meet the owner

Helena Borody began crafting customized special occasion cakes for her friends and family members about 30 years ago. Friends would often react in awe and disbelief that their ornate cakes weren’t just beautiful to look at, but also delicious. It was this positive feedback that encouraged Helena to turn her hobby into a business. As a student of the fine art program at the Ontario College of Art, Helena had practiced with many mediums and was fluent in painting and illustration. It was after receiving a book on Australian sugar lace that she was inspired by what she could create with edible materials. Her creative talent was a perfect match for the art of cake decorating.

Wedding Cakes by Helena come in a variety of flavours. The mocha (made with coffee and chocolate) and orange chiffon are favoured for their light and fluffy consistency. Cakes often have multiple tiers and sometimes many layers separated with buttercream. When it comes to buttercream flavours, the sky is nearly the limit. Some more unconventional types are gaining popularity — pistachio, for example. Decorative edible ornaments are carefully sculpted by hand using fondant icing and small precise tools. The process of constructing these sugar sculptures can often take Helena hours to complete. Finally, a cake is covered with fondant (a soft icing) to seal it all together.
