From SweeTarts to apple tarts, hot cocoa to banana cocoa cake, Café Kilo is your one-stop shop for rich-quality cakes, steamy beverages and colourful candies. But the key word here is cake. Café Kilo was set up as a cake company in 1985 in Montreal’s Mile End when it was then an industrial neighbourhood before becoming the residential and commercial area it is today.
The word “kilo” represents the weight that was used as a measurement to price the cakes — and since then Café Kilo has been baking and selling cakes like hotcakes. “These cakes are really among the best,” says Chokri Fekih, who has been the owner of the company’s coffee shop since 2011. “These cakes have everyone talking, even the singer Charles Aznavour.”
To add to that, the menu’s following descriptions could have you licking your lips in no time: New York style cheesecake covered entirely with whole strawberries; a five-layer avalanche of chocolate cake filled with fudge and chocolate butter cream; and the Kilo classic carrot cake with pineapple, raisins, walnuts and a smooth cream cheese icing.
And that’s just skimming the surface. Some 25 to 30 different types of cakes are available, including all the classic pies and mousses such as pecan pie and tiramisu, which means that every single craving is covered.
