Meet the owner

Nearly all of Gigi's days begin long after the rest of us are in bed. As he sips peacefully on his coffee at 1:30 in the morning, his wife Debora checks their online orders for the coming day. The Leopoldo Fruits & Légumes owner will then head out to Montreal's various wholesale markets and on an empty stomach, he'll sample fresh produce right off the shipping containers, field tips from his backroom informants and pack his van with only the cream of the morning's crop — all before most salesmen and fellow storeowners have even arrived.

"I'm not like most other stores that order by phone," explains the straight-talking 51-year-old Luigi Delle Donne, his tuque and beard giving him the air of a street-smart market sage. "I have guys working in the fridges that put stuff aside for me. But I need to see the merchandise. I have to touch it, taste it and make sure it's good."

Inside the quaint Leopoldo Fruits & Légumes in the Jean-Talon market, Gigi and company let visitors sample the produce and always stand behind all the products they offer all year round. "When I'm at the markets, I never ask for the price. I just want what's best for my clients,” says Gigi. “And most of what I buy, we sell."
