“Every year we find pearls, says Pier Colbert, referring to the students at the production design school he co-founded and directs. A non-profit organization, Productions Jeun'Est trains young people between 18 to 35 years old in the three main disciplines of sound, lighting and rigging. By the end of the 10-month program, students become professionals and leaders in Montréal theatres, event companies, festivals and  Cirque du Soleil.

PJE’s mission is to teach its students a two-fold art of living: “a valuable profession and the ability to contribute to their communities as creative and responsible citizens,” says Pier. PJE recruits come from difficult backgrounds; they are often high school dropouts, or people who have not found their voice and happiness in the job market.

“Production design is manual, physical, fun, it is not routine-based, you travel,” says Pier, who co-founded PJE in 1996. “Production design is just as challenging as any profession. There is a lot you have to know. If I send 20 technicians to the Palais des Congrès, they have to be competent.”

How does the team of PJE instructors keep a strong connection with students who don’t have a great track record in a classroom setting? “You have to be patient, and tolerant about repeating and reminding — and passionate,” adds Pier. The program includes a history of production design techniques, and for this part of the course Pier reveals his personal inspirations. He shows videos of Pink Floyd concerts to students, dissecting their technical dimensions.
