Curling is a truly iconic Canadian sport. Montrealers used to play it on the St. Lawrence River but that all changed when a group of local businessmen met in 1807 to create The Royal Montreal Curling Club, making it the very first sports club in North America.

In 1860, the business moved to an indoor rink situated on Drummond Street before later moving to its present location on de Maisonneuve. The RMCC was officially inaugurated on Christmas Eve in 1892.

Irene Horbowy, general manager of the RMCC, has seen the popularity of curling rise over the past 10 years. “I find that people are more aware of curling due to the Olympics,” she observes. More and more corporations are turning to curling as a team-building event, and the club is more than happy to oblige. “I’m the event planner for their curling, bar and dining requirements,” she adds.
