Exquisite. Amazing. A MUST when visiting...

Exquisite. Amazing. A MUST when visiting Quebec. You must make a reservation, but it is highly recommended that you visit this gem. Aux Anciens Canadiens serves as close to authentic historical French Canadian food as you can get. The menu features a lot of game meats that aren't on most menus... Wapiti anyone? My husband and I visited this restaurant as our one "nice meal" of our honeymoon this fall. And by nice meal, I mean we planned to NOT wear jeans. Although dressy clothes are not required here, you might feel out of place in ratty jeans. Plan to spend time with this meal. This is not fast food! The meal began with wonderful breads, soups and appetizers, followed by the main course and then dessert and coffee. This was all included in the price as long as you order table d'hôte, which is the way to go since it save a lot of money and you get all the yummy extras! The service was wonderful as well and the wait staff is dressed in historical "costumes." But the best part was the food! My husband and I both had poulet en coquette which was a tender chicken breast wrapped in a flaky pastry and topped with a wonderful cream sauce. It was pure heaven! I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend this restaurant to anyone. Just plan ahead for your budget too... we spent $150 for the two of us! It was worth every penny!

Working our way through the cast of Bambie

My partner and I visited here, mainly because we'd heard some great things about it. The food is inventive - the menu is mostly local game - rabbit, venison, buffalo, pheasant (hence the Bambie comment). There are two things this place has going for it though - the atmosphere and the bread. The staff are all dressed in period costumes, but beyond that, the house is very, very, very old. And it hasn't lost that flavor of unpretentious hospitality. The bread is another saga altogether. The French may not be so great on the battlefield, but they can make bread better than ANY other nationality. Even if you're not all about the meat, the bread will satisfy you in ways you've never imagined. And then there's the maple syrup pie, which is something every child must secretly dream about. All sugar, nothing healthy. Go for a walk afterward. Or a nap.
