In 1996, during Montréal’s golden age of rollerblading and the height of the first wave of skateboarding popularity, Janet McNulty and Michel Comeau co-founded Le TAZ, a non-profit-run skatepark.
First located downtown near Berri-UQAM in the Quartier des Spectacles, the mission of the park was to be an extraordinary safe haven for those who were practicing in the streets. Janet herself was one of them; at the time she was a professional modern dancer and assistant choreographer with the Cirque du Soleil who was experimenting with rollerblading.
Shortly after opening, Le TAZ became a legendary skatepark and roller rink known for serving the evolving needs of the alternative and wheeled sport community.
But in 2001 the skatepark lost its space to the Grande Bibliothèque du Québec. A giant local and international outcry followed: “we received so many emails it blocked the City of Montreal’s system,” Michel recalls. “Le TAZ really was, and remains, a public project.”
