My friend ordered the Chicken Tikka, which was a big chicken breast, grilled with Tikka sauce on the side. Different, but good. I had the Ping Gai chicken which was excellent and came with Rice and Salad. Total with 2 beers came to $53. A great deal for pretty good food in an upscale pub atmosphere. Will definitely return. The nachos are to die for, and I don't even like nachos very much. The menu was severely limited due to the incredible business that is Pride Week, and I was at a stretch finding something vegetarian and to my liking. After being told that they were accepting no substitutions (understandably, but I just wanted no mayo and onion on the veggie burger), I went with my second choice, the curry. I wasn't expecting much, but it succeeded my expectations. Not fantastic and it needed more than a sprinkle of salt, but pleasant nonetheless. Co-diners raved about their nachos and pulled pork. Service was a bit scattered due to business, but were very friendly. When a beer was brought to our table that wasn't ordered -- but welcomed! -- he let us have it on the house. When we arrived at New Generation, there was a line of eight people in front of us. We considered going elsewhere but the line quickly disappeared and we were soon seated at a table near the back by a friendly employee. Drinks came quickly while we looked at menus. I ordered the Beef Bento Box, which includes miso soup, salad, six maki, and then, in the box itself, beef, dumplings, tempura shrimp and vegetables, and rice. The miso soup came almost immediately and was given to everyone at the table, even those who didn't order a bento box. I've never really cared for miso, but everyone else seemed to like it. The salad came just as we finished the soup; the maki right after the salad. The next course of the meal always came right on time, just as you finished the previous one. Best of all, there was not one stabbing the entire time we were there. Employees were too busy refilling our drinks. The bento box has great quantity and quality; none of us were able to completely finish it and everything was well-prepared. As I was finishing my tempura vegetables: What the heck? There was a spring roll hidden underneath. **** YES. This is the first time I've been pleasantly surprised by something unexpected in my meal. As we writhed around in our seats from eating too much delicious food, the waitress informed us that our complimentary green tea ice cream was on its way. A bento box costs just over $10. DonDon Izakaya is Toronto's own little taste of Japan. I once visited Tokyo on a business trip, and I remember going to this strange thing called an "izakaya" on several occasions. I remember my first time: I didn't understand why we couldn't just order our own dishes or why it had to be so loud! But by the end of the night, after several decanters of sake had been shared among our group, it all just seemed perfect. DonDon kinda feels this way too. The food may not be gourmet, but it's a ton of fun to eat! (I've heard that we shouldn't expect high-quality foods from izakayas since they are more like pubs anyway!) And the atmosphere is spot on. Oh, and don't even get me started on the drinks. I fell in love with sake in Japan and we've been reunited at DonDon. I've only been to DonDon once, but I'll definitely be going back again! It is a friendly restaurant. The waitresses are nice. The fish (sashimi) was very fresh, but the salmon and tuna were cut in a big chunk (too thick to eat). The the noodles of Nabeyaki Udon were too hard (normally japanese udon should be chewy). The soup of the udon is just a soy sauce soup based with some fish cakes, a shrimp tempura and a fish tempura. The tempura served with the noodles became soggy. The Uni sushi was fresh and the price is good ($6.50 per order). The vegetable tempura dinner is so so. The vegetable tempura were in big chunk, not crispy enough. The sauce of the tempura is okay. I saw other people in the next table who had bento box dinner. Those bento box dinners looked good to me. After seeing *some* favourable reviews and while in the Yorkdale area, I decided to try this place out. So I hope that I'm not being biased after reading unfavourable reviews about their service. We ordered Hwe Dup Bap (sashimi salad) and a dumpling soup with clear noodles - sorry, I don't remember the name. Shortly after placing ordering, 5 side dishes were brought out. Their flavours varied and they were yummy! The salad was perfect for a light, late lunch. Lotsa flavour, especially after adding the sweet/spicy chilli sauce which was provided in a squeeze bottle! My bf said that the dumpling broth was okay. Service-wise, side dishes were taken away, not replenished. And I had to ask for our tea to be refilled! Waitresses seemed waaay more attentive to a table of Korean men. Maybe it's because waitresses are more comfortable speaking their own language. So although service wasn't terrible per se, be a bit proactive to get even better service! Read more

My friends and I always enjoy Tokyo Kitchen. We've never been disappointed. The Gyoza are quite good. I tend to order the Donbury dishes and I go back again and again for them. My friends occasionally go for the ramen. They use the less common dark style with a touch of soy sauce in the broth. I'd recommend trying it at least once if you've only had light ramen before. The green tea icecream must be homemade. It's the most fantastic green tea icecream I've ever tasted. Starting at $10.99, the bowl comes with some basic toppings and additional ones range from $1 to $3.
