A group of my girlfriends surprised me with a Martini & Manicure appointment booked for us for my birthday, following with dinner in the downstairs restaurant (Fuzion) after we had finished. First off, let me rave about the Martini & Manicure service they offer in the Vizion Lounge. The "pure bliss relation treatment" I received was just that, and the hand and arm massage that followed were divine. The pink diamond martinis I had along with it made me feel classy and relaxed, much nicer than a regular spa manicure. We ordered risotto cheese balls and the jerk shrimp skewers off the tapas menu, and I would have been content order another 2 or 3 for my meal, but we had reservations downstairs, so we moved down afterwards and tried their regular dinner menu as well. The girl who did our manicure, Rebecca I beleive her name was, was too sweet and funny and fit right in with our group of girls, so lovely to have drinks with. Patio - a little crowded, especially after being so relaxed during my manicure, but beautiful garden scenery that completely took you away from the Church and Wellesley village area, which was nice. The quail was SOOO good, I can't even begin to describe how pleased I was with that alone. The arctic char was pretty good as well, so was the tofu steak (we shared most of our dishes) For dessert we had the sorbet with mixed fruits, light and satisfying as well. Our server, Kelly was lovely as well. She knew what she was talking about as she went over the menu with us and the cocktail menu as well, and it showed. She was friendly and personable, which always makes the meal a lot more pleasant. The washrooms were down a set of somewhat steep stairs, which my sister and I had a bit of an issue making it down in our high heels, but the washrooms were clean and nicely lit and smelt a lot nicer than any other restaurant washroom I've ever been to. Mars uptown is a classic diner with a twist -- it's got a fun mars / space theme to the decorum, and overall it's well kept, clean, and above average of what you can expect from the traditional greasy spoon type diner. I ordered the traditional eggs benedict which came, as excpected, with two poached eggs, on english muffins, and peameal bacon, with some potatoes and a slice of orange. Overall the presentation was good for a diner. The orange was sliced in twist and nicely displayed, the eggs benny were artistically smothered in hollandaise, and the potatoes looked greasily tastilicious. So how was it? Well those benny fans among us will know how difficult it is to achieve the perfect benny. This was not perfection, but was above average, decent in every way. I'm still on the search for Toronto's best eggs benedict, but if I had to go back to Mars and have another I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. So first of all the waitress asked how I wanted the eggs poached -- a good sign. If they don't ask you know you're in trouble. Unfortunately, even though I asked for medium poached I got one medium and one hard egg. Not a meal breaker, but still not so great. The hollandaise sauce was a little on the gelatinous side, but was flavorful, so I can forgive the consistency. It wasn't the best hollandaise I've had, but it certainly wasn't the worst either. The peameal bacon on the other hand was awesome. I'm actually not a big fan of the peameal (I prefer standard), but they did it right -- grilled to perfection, and the slice thickness was just right too. The english muffins were the standard affair -- toasted too lightly for my liking, but I don't get in a knot about the muffins unless something is terribly wrong. The potatoes looked and smelled amazing, unfortunately they failed to deliver the same oral "oomph" that they give upon the first visual inspection. Maybe more spices would do the trick, or add in some cheese. They were fine though, it's not like I didn't eat them, I just wasn't wowed by them. As for the service, nothing to complain about. The service was actually quite good considering the diner type atmosphere. Warm, friendly, adequate in speed. So, to summarize, Mars is a decent diner with decent food at good prices. I wouldn't hesitate to go back if someone else wanted to go or I was hungry and passing by, but I'm definitely still on the search for a really killer benny in Toronto. Read more

It's a big restaurant and the tables are spaced apart nicely so you can have a conversation without worrying about everyone around you hearing. And they have great big circular booths that are usually available - a great touch. We have our regular server - I believe his name is Pavel - and he's fantastic. He's not pushy, he's unobtrusive and always friendly. One of the city's best waiters for sure. When it comes to the food, the taste is great. I usually enjoy a pasta as a main and for appetizers we mix it up. The selection is great and I've never had a meal I didn't enjoy. The prices are fantastic. For a downtown Toronto restaurant like this I'm always amazed when I get the bill. Often times we have two appetizers, two entrees and a full bottle of wine and the bill still comes to under $100. Thank goodness I was on guest list so I didn't have to pay cover!! I was surprised at the lack of lineup at the door but I guess it was because I was relatively earlier than the regular hr that everyone else shows up (although i don't consider 11:20pm that early to go clubbing) but I heard that it gets busy after 12, which was in fact, quite true. So when I got inside, there weren't a lot of people and when i looked up to the overhanging balconies, ceiling and walls, i felt like i could really imagine it from its courthouse days. It makes the experience more unique but also a bit thought provoking. This is a good location for the most part. The drive-thru complicates things though. It is extremely busy....always...and despite the large parking lot there is often chaos. Was told it was more spicy than the wet rib, loved the heat. Had it with a nice Malbec Coleslaw - best I have ever had. The sauce was creamy but light and didn't overwhelm the veg. Very fresh and crunchy. Sweet Potato Fry- done nice and dark (double fried) and still full full of flavor but no grease AT ALL. excellent job. Atmosphere- low key, dim lights and excellent music mix.
