It was my choice. Anywhere I wanted to go for my birthday dinner was the plan. It had been over 10 years since I last ate at the Charcoal Steak House, so that was it. We made reservations early and were seated at a booth. The restaurant was very dark, which bothered one of my guests, but I loved it. A very warm atmosphere. Private while sitting in a room full of other diners. We chose the Crab Cakes for our appetizer. They were delicious. Perfectly crusted with panko, soft and tender on the inside. A nice tartar sauce served on the side. The dish also came with a side of pickled cucumber, which I was not a fan of, but my guests loved. Looking over the menu, we made the obvious choices being in a steak house. The prime rib special, the Nebraska Rib-Eye and the King City Rib-Eye. The Prime Rib was great. Soft and juicy, but my guest had an issue. She ordered well done, but it was served medium. She still ate it, and loved it, but was not given what she ordered. My other guest loved the King-City Steak. Served with Sweet Potato Fries. I sampled a bite or two of her steak, and it tasted better than my Nebraska cut. The steak I chose, the Nebraska Rib, was wonderful. But again, the kitchen was a little off with the cooking. I ordered medium, and was served well done. Regardless, it still was one of the best steaks I've ever had. The ends of the steak had that perfect crunchy crust that everyone loves on a Rib Steak. We passed on dessert, seeing I had a cake at home waiting. After chatting to our waitress, my guest let it slip that it was my birthday, before the bill came she brought out a peice of Mint Ice Cream Cake free of charge. I appreciated that. Read more

i've been going to sing lee for years, and they are truly a gem on victoria street even after the management changes. their lunch specials are probably the best in town, the portions are fairly big and the food is always great! there are also so many choices that even as a regular customer, i have problems deciding on which dish to try! the service is friendly and very good for the style of restaurant it is, my husband and i are always greeted with a warm smile. place is also a lot tidier after the new owners have taken over. take out can be a bit slow when theyre busy, but we are willing to wait for a quality meal rather than restaurants who tend to put something mediocre together to conserve time. We go to the Barley Works on Friday or Saturday nights after nine pm to play trivia. We have samples seveal of their menu offerings and really enjoy the perogies and spinach salad. April is a great bartender and we are never left waiting or wondering if we are being taken care of. Worth the drive to Waterloo if you like a place to sit and play a bit of interactive trivia. I visit this location on a regular basis since I live in the area! First time I visited this location, one of the bartenders asked my name, and remembered it the next time i visited! All of the wait staff are super friendly, and funny! This location has a lot of daily features and drink specials which me and my friends enjoy...Food has always been good, and if there is anything ever wrong or not up to my satisfaction the management and staff make sure it is dealt with so I leave satisfied. My family and I have been patron's of the Charcoal Steakhouse for about 40 years - since it's location on Weber Street where Zhers is now. I was a little girl when we used to go there on Sundays. In recent years, my friends and I attend Martini's for birthdays and other special occasions so I would say between the Charcoal, Martini's and Del Dante's, I attend there for dinner about 6 or 7 times a year (average once every 2 months). The Charcoal has always been my favourite restaurant and I order NOTHING but the "individual meaty ribs" with the brown sugar sauce. I have always been happy that you could order them in Martini's as well. Last night was my birthday, and again my two girlfriend's and I attended Martini's to celebrate. In recent years instead of ordering the rib dinner, I order a French onion soup (the best ever) with 2 of the "individual meaty ribs" (this is how it was stated on the menu). Last night, the ribs came with one bone and was the same size as one rib always was in the past. When I told the waiter I had ordered 2, he said they take out every second bone but you get the meat of both ribs. I advised they had never done that before and the rib (which he said was the meat of two) was the same size as it always was. He got a woman who I assum was a manager and she said "they had always done it that way". My girlfriend and I argued with her saying we had been coming for years and there was always 2 ribs criss-crossed on the plate (2 bones). She said again "they had always done it this way" and then I find out she has only worked there 8 or 9 months (so obviously she had no idea what they had "always done"). I wondered how they did the dinner now as it had always been 6 ribs and my mom and dad split it when they go there (3 each). She said that the dinner is a rack of ribs which is 12 but since every second bone is removed, it looks like 6. Why then had the menu always said "6 individual meaty ribs"? She got the General Manager who offered us an extra rib each and took the item off the bill which was great of him however, I am still concerned with the "new:" presentation on the plate. I don't care what was said (apparently they asked the cook) It was only ONE rib not two. I was told by the waiter that the owner was there and I could talk to him but then was told by the General Manager that he wasn't there. I do appreciate the lengths to which the General Manager went to make my friends and myself happy but if that is what they are doing now, I probably won't order that again as the value for what they call 2 ribs is not worth $7 as it was only a couple of bites. Also, when the reservation was made my girlfriend was asked if it was a special occasion (which they always aske) and they always bring a little desert to share but not this time. As stated this is my favourite restaurant and I hate to complain about it (I have never complaned about it in 40 years) but if this is the chef's decision, someone should talk to him that it really looks like the owners are getting greedy and offering less food for the same price. we went for a friend's birthday dinner. her and her bf love the place. they talk about it all the time. i have heard mixed reviews about the place. going online and checking out menu didn't look too appealing to me. regular food with a high price and over stuffed with "expensive" words for simple ingredients i had a glass of the Chardonnay from usa. excellent should have order 1.2 liter. i shared the sicilian mussel except made not spicy (don't like spicy food). the broth has aromatic and delightful. nice tomatoes, olives and onion broth. mussels were plump and tasty. the table bread was amazing. i usually steer away from bread because it is dry and garbage. but this was warm, soft and fluffy in the middle with a slight chew and crispy on outside. i ordered the shrimp and scallop carciofi (fettucine) made without cream and with tomato instead. the pasta was cooked perfectly, scallops a bit fishy, shrimps were poached perfectly. a bit too much tomato but im a bigger fan of cooked pasta perfect el dente. people sitting around me ordered veggie gnocchi (she loved it), short rib gnocchi (he wolfed it down and wanted more), prosciutto fuselli (she said pasta was amazing too slow portion and prosciutto tasted like bacon, pork chop dinner (thought it was amazing), smoked chicken el la vodka (he said was ok). food was good better than i expected. a bit over priced but it was a friend's birthday.
