It was my choice. Anywhere I wanted to go for my birthday dinner was the plan. It had been over 10 years since I last ate at the Charcoal Steak House, so that was it. We made reservations early and were seated at a booth. The restaurant was very dark, which bothered one of my guests, but I loved it. A very warm atmosphere. Private while sitting in a room full of other diners. We chose the Crab Cakes for our appetizer. They were delicious. Perfectly crusted with panko, soft and tender on the inside. A nice tartar sauce served on the side. The dish also came with a side of pickled cucumber, which I was not a fan of, but my guests loved. Looking over the menu, we made the obvious choices being in a steak house. The prime rib special, the Nebraska Rib-Eye and the King City Rib-Eye. The Prime Rib was great. Soft and juicy, but my guest had an issue. She ordered well done, but it was served medium. She still ate it, and loved it, but was not given what she ordered. My other guest loved the King-City Steak. Served with Sweet Potato Fries. I sampled a bite or two of her steak, and it tasted better than my Nebraska cut. The steak I chose, the Nebraska Rib, was wonderful. But again, the kitchen was a little off with the cooking. I ordered medium, and was served well done. Regardless, it still was one of the best steaks I've ever had. The ends of the steak had that perfect crunchy crust that everyone loves on a Rib Steak. We passed on dessert, seeing I had a cake at home waiting. After chatting to our waitress, my guest let it slip that it was my birthday, before the bill came she brought out a peice of Mint Ice Cream Cake free of charge. I appreciated that. Read more

A friend gave us a couple of gift certificates for Dino's so we decided to go there for dinner. We got there around 5:30pm and were promptly seated. It was not that busy for a Monday evening. We ordered our drinks and the rib & wing combos. The combos included a choice of side ceasar or house salad or house soup. We got one of each of the salads and they were very good. The ceasar salad had real bacon bits and shredded parmasaen cheese on top. We got the house Jack Daniels BBQ sauce on the ribs & wings and it was AWESOME!!! The wings were decent sized and there was lots of meat on the ribs.... which fell right off the bone! The combo also included a small portion of veggies and choice of potato..(we got fries and sweet-potato fries). The desserts were ok.... the turtle cheese cake was a bit small but tasted good. The chocolate avalanche would have been better with brownie instead of chocolate cake. The waitress was very nice and checked on us a few times and refilled our drinks. This place has the BEST Tzatziki sauce ever, it is SO good. I always get extra servings and put it on everything, because it tastes amazing with all the flavours. My friend and I usually get the same thing and share. Their portions are reasonable sizes for the prices they offer. I love that they come with rice and salad :) The server is also friendly and is always smiling eventhough he is conservative. My family and I have been patron's of the Charcoal Steakhouse for about 40 years - since it's location on Weber Street where Zhers is now. I was a little girl when we used to go there on Sundays. In recent years, my friends and I attend Martini's for birthdays and other special occasions so I would say between the Charcoal, Martini's and Del Dante's, I attend there for dinner about 6 or 7 times a year (average once every 2 months). The Charcoal has always been my favourite restaurant and I order NOTHING but the "individual meaty ribs" with the brown sugar sauce. I have always been happy that you could order them in Martini's as well. Last night was my birthday, and again my two girlfriend's and I attended Martini's to celebrate. In recent years instead of ordering the rib dinner, I order a French onion soup (the best ever) with 2 of the "individual meaty ribs" (this is how it was stated on the menu). Last night, the ribs came with one bone and was the same size as one rib always was in the past. When I told the waiter I had ordered 2, he said they take out every second bone but you get the meat of both ribs. I advised they had never done that before and the rib (which he said was the meat of two) was the same size as it always was. He got a woman who I assum was a manager and she said "they had always done it that way". My girlfriend and I argued with her saying we had been coming for years and there was always 2 ribs criss-crossed on the plate (2 bones). She said again "they had always done it this way" and then I find out she has only worked there 8 or 9 months (so obviously she had no idea what they had "always done"). I wondered how they did the dinner now as it had always been 6 ribs and my mom and dad split it when they go there (3 each). She said that the dinner is a rack of ribs which is 12 but since every second bone is removed, it looks like 6. Why then had the menu always said "6 individual meaty ribs"? She got the General Manager who offered us an extra rib each and took the item off the bill which was great of him however, I am still concerned with the "new:" presentation on the plate. I don't care what was said (apparently they asked the cook) It was only ONE rib not two. I was told by the waiter that the owner was there and I could talk to him but then was told by the General Manager that he wasn't there. I do appreciate the lengths to which the General Manager went to make my friends and myself happy but if that is what they are doing now, I probably won't order that again as the value for what they call 2 ribs is not worth $7 as it was only a couple of bites. Also, when the reservation was made my girlfriend was asked if it was a special occasion (which they always aske) and they always bring a little desert to share but not this time. As stated this is my favourite restaurant and I hate to complain about it (I have never complaned about it in 40 years) but if this is the chef's decision, someone should talk to him that it really looks like the owners are getting greedy and offering less food for the same price. After learning I would be dining alone tonight, I decided to try a tiny little place I had heard mentioned recently. My waiter was attentive, pleasant and quite knowledgeable about the food he was serving. The overall atmosphere was pleasing and would be the perfect setting for a romantic meal. The choices offered, combined with the soothing surroundings peaked my curiousity enough that I decide for the second time in the evening to try something new. I tried the Bison burger with Warm Potato salad. The server described it to me as a Bison burger with caramelized onions, smoked cheddar, truffle scented mushrooms and barbecue sauce. Jake & Humphreys make all their own bread items that appear on their menu, the combination of the Bison, toppings on a fresh and soft bun, made the whole item a palate pleaser. A nice glass of South African Cabernet Sauvignon enhanced what was already a sumptious dining experience. I will be returning to the restaurant again, definitely a great place to dine, relax and enjoy.
