The Writer's Festival provided the opportunity to visit this restaurant twice in one week. What strikes one immediately, besides the very loud fountain by the door, are the warm and welcoming smiles of the staff. I was famished when we arrived at 5:00 PM. When our food came, very quickly after we ordered, I though that the servings seemed awfully small. Our meal arrived piping hot, the Jasmine Rice was wonderful, fresh and light and the Pad Thai and shrimp dish were very beautifully presented and very colourful. I am very much a foodie and I want a restaurant to give me an experience I am unable to create in my own kitchen. What Talay Thai provides is food that is a riot of flavours – seemingly five to nine distinct flavours flowing over your taste buds simultaneously. It works and I am now curious as to how I can recreate these multiple flavour sensations in my own kitchen. Our second meal was exactly the same as the first. Warm greeting, quick but unrushed service (great for pre-theatre or event dining), deceptively small looking servings, but incredibly tasty, attractive and filling food. We choose another shrimp dish, this one made with coconut milk and a tofu and vegetable dish. Everything was perfectly cooked and what is most striking about the food is the sense that every ingredient is incredibly fresh. Both meals were delivered to our table at their peak of perfection. As we arrived early there was plenty of free parking adjacent to the restaurant. This is the perfect place to shift from work to relaxation mode. With their quick service Talay Thai is also an ideal place to eat if the next part of your evening includes getting to your entertainment venue, well fed all while feeling unrushed. Read more

Been twice in the past month-once for dinner and a lunch. The space is small and has been busy but accomodating on both occasions. You can buy fresh fish to take home from a counter as you come in. They serve a basket of warm little grainy rolls to start along with glasses of water. My companion's halibut, declared the best ever, sat perched on julliened veggies with a light citrus sauce as the days special. My jumbo shrimps were perfectly done in a garlic sauce. The glasses of wine were more generous than one usually finds. The fish and chips came with fresh cut fries and a small homemade coleslaw. Nice and crispy. Our only disappointments were a cup of lobster bisque-thin broth vs the creamy concoction I was expecting(Maybe I don't know bisque) and crab cakes which came as two large balls with a uniform minced texture. We wandered around Ottawa for an hour before randomly selecting Fat Tuesday's. We heard the piano playing and just had to go see what it was like. The restaurant looked great and the piano was excellent background music. We started our meal with the alligator and it did not disappoint. Afterwards we got the proscuitto wrapped chicken. They had a slight issue with some of the chicken being undercooked, however, it was quickly fixed when it was brought to their attention. When we received the cooked meal we found that it was definitely worth the wait. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Despite the small problem we would recommend this restaurant to friends and family and will probably go back. Read more

I read all the reviews prior to making reservations there. It seemed to me that the bad reviews were from folks that did not know what to expect and were surprised when they got there. The web page is quite clear of the menu and venue. I saw it and was not surprised when I got into the restaurant. We went for dinner before a show at the NAC. The server was at our table promptly and even asked if we were going to a show so that she could ensure our service and food would allow us plenty of time to get to the show. Very thoughtful and the service remained top notch throughout. Our appetizers were great. Our dinners were very good, the fish was fresh, the steak was done exactly as asked, the duck confit melted in your mouth except for the crispy skin...which was perfect. The sides were appropriate for the meal and also delicious but the 3 root vegetable mash that came with the Duck was extraordinary and deserves mention..Some had desserts which were declared as a real treat. We were in and out in time for our show but never hurried or short changed in our dinner. A very good experience overall. Pricey? Well, it was everything that was posted on the web page so no surprised at all. A very good spot with very good food and caring , professional servers. Just what you want for a good night out.
