Meet the owner

The Old Mill Toronto began as a tea garden and restaurant on August 4th, 1914. That’s the same day as the start of World War I. Its founder, Home Smith, touted it as a little bit of England far from England and it quickly became a de facto community centre for residents to gather.

“It was a place where everyone would come to exchange information and find out about the war,” says Natalie Bauer, the director of marketing, communications and events at Old Mill Toronto. “There was big band music so they would come and dance. It was a place for the community, and it’s always been there for that. That’s been the underlying premise behind the Old Mill.”

For more than 100 years Old Mill Toronto has been synonymous with celebrations, anniversaries and special occasions that bring people together.  It has evolved from being a tea garden, restaurant and dance hall, now offering banquet rooms, a patio bar and a hotel with 57 unique luxury rooms and suites.

“I guess our longevity is due to us changing with the times but still keeping that historical originality and purpose behind the Old Mill,” Natalie suggests. “We’ve just evolved with the times.”

Food was not that great and overpriced , manager extremely rude he told us that our time was up that he had a line up outside waiting for our table which was a lie , there was not a line up. We were not told there'd was a two hour time limit at time of booking or when we arrived, would not have a booked a function here , we were celebrated an occasion and wanted to take our time. Will never return here after Being treated like that , will pass on to everyone I know

I'm sorry the manager did not communicate in a more sensitive manner to you that your table was required after two hours. I did explain this in our direct emails to each other. I hope you have received the complimentary Sunday Dinner Buffet for four people that I sent you.

A Great Choice for a Special Occasion

We went here for the Easter buffet brunch and to belatedly celebrate a milestone family birthday. The atmosphere was great overall; I was glad they seated us in the bright conservatory area, rather than the dimmer interior sections. There was a wonderful variety of food choices - menu items you wouldn't typically make at home or find at any run-of-the-mill buffet restaurant. The chef at the carvery was engaging, and the table wait staff were friendly, prompt and efficient. We bought a small item at the gift shop afterward, where prices were reasonable. My only 'complaint' would be that the cost of parking isn't included with the meal. It's expensive enough to eat there, especially with the prices raised due to the special holiday.

Great Atmosphere, Expensive Price

This was the second time that we had been to the Old Mill Inn for dinner. The first time was during the Summerlicious menu, which was excellent as it was a good price for delicious food. This time however, we weren't as impressed. The price for a meal which includes a small piece of chicken and a biscuit was $25.00. We were still starving after our meal, and our total came out to over $100. We also had to pay a cover charge for the live band, which we weren't too thrilled about. The food is amazing, but the portion sizes are small and you always leave hungry. The live band was great, and it got people dancing. I wouldn't go back only because I ended up spending money for something that only filled me up for an hour.

Not Bad, But Needs Improvement

The Olde Mill has been one of my favorite restaurants, but there could be some improvements. My wife emailed some comments about the Afternoon Tea--which skimped on the food, hot water and spoons--but never received an answer. Sunday brunch was superb, but at more than $30 a person, we felt it was overpriced. We were going to celebrate my birthday there, but after we made reservations the Olde Mill engaged a band and informed us that we would be charged a "cover charge" of $49 per person unless we changed our reservations to another day--so the birthday plans were completely disrupted. Bad show! We are looking to return to the Olde Mill if they will start answering their customers' concerns and providing more value for the prices charged. The wait staff in the main dining area have always been great, but those for Afternoon Tea slip into some unknown dimension when you need something. Olde Mill--please heed your customers' concerns!

cold and rude service, food nothing special

The most unpleasant dining experience that I can recall in a loooong time. Went out with a close friend for an evening of what we hoped would be good food and fun. We picked the Old Mill as the Winterlicious menu sounded good. Well, the wait staff couldn't have been less welcoming or surly. When asked about the menu options you'd think that this was a huge imposition on the waiter. Isn't that his job?? It truly felt like he had better things to do than wait on our table. We had never felt so unwelcome anywhere else. The food was mediocre at best - or maybe it tasted that way because of the cold environment in which we dined. We couldn't wait to leave. We left a tip and regretted it as the staff certainly did nothing to earn it. Both my friend and I e-mailed the Old Mill to voice our disappointment and never heard a word back - nothing. If an organisation's culture starts at the top then this is quite the reflection. The Old Mill should wake up and recognise that we are 2011 and good customer service is not an option. I was at another truly fine restaurant last week where the wait staff were superb as was the food. It was a night and day experience and their extra gratuity was definitely deserved. The lack of response by anyone at the Old Mill to our e-mail has assured that we are sharing this negative experience at every opportunity and contrasting it to the overwhelmingly excellent experience that we had at a competitor. What a "has been" restaurant. Stay away from this dinosaur.
