Meet the owner

The Old Mill Toronto began as a tea garden and restaurant on August 4th, 1914. That’s the same day as the start of World War I. Its founder, Home Smith, touted it as a little bit of England far from England and it quickly became a de facto community centre for residents to gather.

“It was a place where everyone would come to exchange information and find out about the war,” says Natalie Bauer, the director of marketing, communications and events at Old Mill Toronto. “There was big band music so they would come and dance. It was a place for the community, and it’s always been there for that. That’s been the underlying premise behind the Old Mill.”

For more than 100 years Old Mill Toronto has been synonymous with celebrations, anniversaries and special occasions that bring people together.  It has evolved from being a tea garden, restaurant and dance hall, now offering banquet rooms, a patio bar and a hotel with 57 unique luxury rooms and suites.

“I guess our longevity is due to us changing with the times but still keeping that historical originality and purpose behind the Old Mill,” Natalie suggests. “We’ve just evolved with the times.”

Georgie: We feel your pain! Beware! Four of us attended the Saturday Night Oldies live radio show held every now & then at the Old Mill. (Good time BTW) We have not attended in the past due to high pricing $100 / couple plus food etc. We called that afternoon for availability and we were told $49 + tax & gratuity per person for show AND dinner, set menu. We assumed, key word assumed, that they had changed their high priced ways. Well, at closing time we were handed a bill for $500. There was obviously a loss in translation. The entertainment charge was $49 pp, dinner was not included in the price as we were informed. The manager handled our situation poorly. He denied his mistake of false advertising and continuously kept walking away insisting it was our fault then called security for no reason at all. We were not being confrontational in any way we simply wanted to discuss the issue at hand. Now the food; my friend & I chose the over priced ($38) prime rib. Our wives chose the Pad Thai. I honestly say the prime rib was very good but that is where it ends! The Pad Thai was like no other we have experienced at any other establishment. Warmed up flavourless coleslaw was my first impression. There was some sort of crispy noodle concoction which resembled a tangled ball of string after 2 or 3 applications of varathane. The mashed potatoes would have come in handy earlier in the day when I ran short of drywall putty. A dry flavourless blob of what we concluded must have derived from a box of Carnation instant mashed potatoes. To assist us in our efforts to consume the "mashed potatoes" we determined a little moisture would improve the spuds. Enter the gravy. If you like Franco American canned gravy you are in luck. I maybe incorrect about the Franco American label but the flavour did remind us of our old high school cafeteria gravy. If our deductive reasoning is wrong and it was not Franco American, well it could serve as a killer driveway sealant. The spinach, well to save time, lets just say it was referred to as Lake Erie seaweed. As stated earlier, the show was entertaining and enjoyable. The service was somewhat friendly but lacking. We were chasing the old buggers around half the night for forgotten drink orders. We are still trying to determine if there is a dessert menu. The entire wait staff and manager seem to portray a holier than now attitude and that it was our privilege to be at their establishment. The evening was fine till the end which left a bad taste in our mouths and not just from the food. The chef and manager should be ashamed!

We had dinner at The Old Mill Inn last night. What a disaster. The place was filled beyond capacity. We were seated at a table right at the kitchen door, the waiters carried huge trays of food over our heads as they squeezed past us. The "entertainment" LIVE WITH MIKE COOPER consisted of loud tinny "oldies" music and was only visible via a TV screen. The food was mediocre at best. The prices were astronomical for the quality. Vegetables consisted of sloppy wet chard, the mashed potatoes were stale, reheated and tasteless. The bill for 2 of us came to close on $300.00. What a rip off. Will NEVER return.

Will not be returning

We got married at The Old Mill 10 years ago. We decided to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary by attending the afternoon brunch. They will only take reservations for a party of 8 or more. There was only 2 of us and therefore, they would not accept reservations. They did not ask us if we were there for a special occasion. When we arrived they sat us right behind the buffet. Not a great view. There was a round table of 3 available. We asked for that table and were told it was for 3, when I insisted, we were then told it was reserved? How could this be when they only take reservations for a party of 8 or more? We were there for an hour and the table of 3 was still available when we left. The worst experience we have ever received. The Old Mill needs to stop focusing on the $$$ signs and start focusing on customer service. Will not be returning.
