Meet the owner

Joe Sangha, founder and operator of Chutneys Indian Grill, has started an Indian food revolution in Edmonton. Being second-generation Indian himself, he noticed the cuisine seemed to come in one style: the sit-down buffet. He felt that while buffets are generally quite delicious, they aren't the only way people can enjoy Indian cuisine. “The only Indian food available is in the outdated traditional buffet style,” Joe explains. “We saw a gap in the fast, casual, quick-serve market where there are no Indian food options.”

According to Joe, outdated delivery methods aren’t the only issue facing Indian cuisine, either. Joe says that Indian buffets typically use “a lot of butter, oil, and cream” and this leads to heavier, less healthy food. “Lots of people think that Indian food makes you feel lethargic, but our food is actually quite healthy and you can enjoy it as a lunch option and still have a productive day,” he says. “I eat it twice a day. You can do that. It’s not heavy; it’s healthy and delicious.”
