There are certain types of retail businesses that are stubbornly resistant to corporatization. As big box stores and multinationals expand, and as more and more of our neighbourhoods begin to look alike, we can still count on some pockets of quirkiness and individuality to remain. Case in point: NY Novelties, a specialty shop in the best sense of the word.

The novelties at this eclectic emporium are props and party supplies, and it’s part of a venerable tradition: the family-run shop. Owner Edwin Kim talks about the history of his business, which was handed down to him by his father: “The store opened around 1975, and my father took it over in 2005. He ran it for six years, and when he moved to Saskatchewan for another business opportunity I took over.”

Edwin is happy to carry on the tradition, and he speaks fondly of catering to his customers’ desire for fun: “People like to party in Vancouver, and I can meet their needs,” he says with a smile. It’s the type of answer you get from a business owner on the front line. Edwin doesn’t sit at a desk; like most specialty shop owners, he’s right there to greet you as you walk in the door.
