Make a List of Targeted Used Cars

Toyota, Nissan or Honda make for good used cars, but they’re generally more expensive than lesser-known brands that make good models, but don’t sell as well. Compare cars, consider more than one brand, and make a list of different car models that would meet your needs and budget.

They are also the most trustworthy sources, and can provide more options in the event that problems should arise, since many dealers offer certified used cars, that usually include a warranty.

Independent car lots stock cheaper cars, in terms of cost, but they’re frequently a varied mix of good and bad vehicles, in terms of quality. Similarly, pre-owned cars sold by owners can be even cheaper; however, your legal rights are limited in cases where issues arise with the purchased vehicle, and warranties are non-existant.

Keep a budget in mind when shopping for a used car, and be sure to compare prices from different dealers and sources. Used car prices vary greatly depending on their year of fabrication, their mileage, and whether or not they’ve been involved in any accidents.

History Report

Knowing the history of a pre-owned car is an important early step in the buying process. The car’s history will reveal if the odometer has been rolled back, or if the car has been rebuilt or salvaged. You can get history reports through institutions such as CarFax or AutoCheck, using the vehicle VIN number.

Test drive and Inspection

Always make sure you test drive the car to know if it has the right feel and that it responds to your needs. This is also a good way to assess a car’s condition, by listening to the engine, see if the check engine light is lit, try the brakes, test the air conditioning, and to see if there are any strange smells while driving. If you like the car, consider also having it inspected by a mechanic, before you buy it, to avoid any unwanted surprises.
