I love beer and I love a long list of options recited to me by memory... there seem to be so many negative reviews about the Bier Markt but... it's a pub, really, and a spacious, respectable one with Great Beer at that. I was at the Esplanade location last Friday afternoon around 4pm with my husband and some friends and we had a fantastic time drinking pints of Steigl, Erdinger weissbrau, Jupiler, and sharing fondue--wish there was a ski hill nearby. I made reservations and went to the restaurant at the end of May for my 18th birthday party. It looked very elegant fom the mall entrance. The ambience was very modern and cozy, though it was slightly noisy at times. Service was prompt and attentive with our orders and the manager even came and brought me a piece of chocolate cake with "Happy Birthday" written in icing on the plate. Everyone unanimously agreed that the food was great. We shared a group veggie, chips, and dip platter and I had the steak well done. It was cooked to perfection and was artfully arranged with savory garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables. The cake I received was delicious, as was the sorbet a friend let me try. Overall, the evening went perfectly and the meal was easy on the wallet since none of us drank any alcohol. I would definitely come back here or to another Oliver & Bonacini managed etablishment. Even a snowstorm doesn't keep Toronto diners down, as we discovered last weekend at Jump in January. It was quieter than usual due to the weather, but our food was very good. We had an extremely affable waiter from England. The service started out a bit slow, with water poured and wine ordered but 25 minutes before some bread arrived. If we hadn't been so hungry beforehand we might not have noticed. Otherwise, the food was excellent. The Bacon-Wrapped Boneless Quail appetizer was absolutely delicious. The Wild & Tame Mushroom Soup was good, but as we told our server, it needed some cream to give it more depth and round out the taste. The Mahogany-Glazed Black Cod with Lentils was very good, and my partner had the delicious Beef Tenderloin.
