Meet the owner

Jon Truch’s mission is to make the hotdog cool again. For over a decade, his Tubby Dog diner has heaped – and we mean heaped – gallons of cheese, bacon, mustard, wasabi, horseradish, peanut butter and numerous other toppings in uproarious combinations on top of substantial, grilled wieners to the astonishment of hipsters, teenagers, professional athletes, nuclear families and Food Network hosts. Throw in some video games, pinball, rock ’n’ roll and movie screenings to the tiny diner on the 17th Avenue Southwest strip and its easy to understand why Tubby Dog has endured as a little palace of kitschy, pop cultural fun of Warholian proportions.

“I do everything extreme. That’s how I live my life,” Jon says, half joking as he sits at one of the diner's counter stools. He explains why it is that the diner's dogs, such as the A Bomb (smothered in cheese, mustard, bacon, mayo and potato chips), The Sumo (topped with wasabi, seaweed salad, pickled ginger and sesame seeds) and the Slaw Dog (stacked with coleslaw, chili, cheddar and pickles), are so over the top with toppings.  “It’s just how it evolved,' he says. "I’m pretty much all or nothing. There’s no low bar. Aim high.”

Among Tubby Dog's legion of fans are members of the Calgary Stampeders who hail from the southern U.S. and can’t otherwise find a chili dog of such excessive proportions in Calgary.

Visiting from Toronto and I had heard about this "must visit" hot dog place. Took my family from Calgary and we found it to be loud and no seating. And the hotdog is so messy you can't even eat it properly. Felt like a laundry mat atmosphere. Perhaps after a night at a bar. But the hotdogs were a huge disappointment.

Give me another tubby dog!

WOW! Tubby Dog is a great place to stop before, or after the bar. Since I have visited I have had a hankering for another A-Bomb. These hot dogs are creative and amazing - their ingredients include things like Captain Crunch cereal, chips, PB&J (not all on the same one) and there is also normal(er) hot dogs for those less-adventurous. At 3 am, after the bar they keep their window open. During the day it's a really cool feel - rustic hot dog store. This tops my list for fast food!!

7 mouthwatering feasts in Calgary for Thanksgiving 2017

Tubby Dog is serving everything that comes on your Thanksgiving plate all in a bun. The Gobbler starts with a layer of mashed potatoes topped with a turkey dog, sautéed onions, stuffing and cranberry and apple sauce. The feast is, of course, served with a slice of pumpkin pie. The Gobbler will be available from Friday to Sunday.

Winning wieners and stellar sausages in Calgary

A 17th Avenue Southwest hot dog joint so good they made a movie about it, Tubby Dog is open from 11:30 am on, but happens to be a late-night dining institution. Featuring as much flavour as it does personality, this contemporary diner’s dogs feature odd toppings like Captain Crunch, wasabi and crushed potato chips. Check the eatery’s events calendar for live music performances.

The 10-step guide to bacon recovery in Calgary

The 10-step guide to bacon recovery in Calgary

This favourite 17th Avenue hot dog shop is famous for hosting all ages weekend rock shows featuring local bands. Feast your eyes on the kitschy diner décor, bring your earplugs and don’t forget your change purse because you will surely want to play one (or all) of the vintage arcade games that line the walls. After you’ve worked up an appetite rocking out, order an A-Bomb (cheese, bacon, mayo, mustard, ketchup, and potato chips), or go all out and order Sherm’s ultimate Gripper – a dog, wrapped in bacon, then deep fried. It’s so wrong, but so right.
