(Harlem on Queen) After a weekend of dining at pretentious good-for-nothing restaurants (re: Spice Route) we decided to settle for Harlem, my bf's idea as the location of this place is easy to miss with so many other eateries surrounding it. We had the brunch/lunch menu. The waitresses were very attentive. Served right away. Food was quite tasty, although the only negative part about it was that it came out a lukewarm. The catfish lafyette was delicious! Yam and yukon hash was good, but would've been better if served hot, as potatoes tend to get rubbery when it gets cold. The ribs were not bad either. There was a lot of food on the menu that I wanted to try today, so I'll definitely go back , maybe during dinner the next time. Read more

Quaint little cafe with old-world-charm leaded glass windows that open to the street in summer. I have been there many times, always getting one of their breakfast meals. The service has always been quick and polite. The owner/manager was always on site and seems to take pride in good service. The place is usually pretty busy, but has a quick turn around time, so there isn't usually a wait more than a minute or two. As soon as your coffee cup starts to empty, the waitress or busser is over to fill it right back up (if you desire). It is a good old fashioned diner/greasy spoon that is great to sit back and have conversation with friends, and also great prices. Bonus, it is located close to Riverdale farms (TO's 1st zoo) which is great place (free) for kids to see animals, and near riverdale park for a game of baseball, tennis, ultimate or walking the dog. The meal is always done how you like it, and price includes coffee/tea and a small cup of OJ. Not bad at all ;) One of the most economical places to have a full meal, and unlike Yorkville restos I have never been dissatisfied with the food nor the service. The one thing they could improve on is offering more hot water for tea drinkers...we enjoy refills too! Read more

A group of 21 of us attended this venue on a Thursday morning for breakfast. Pro: They arranged the seating at the back of the restaurant to accommodate us at one long table. The music wasn't too loud and we had the whole area to ourselves. Pro: The waiter was friendly and VERY efficient!!! He took ALL of our orders without writing anything down and got all of our orders right. We were VERY impressed with his memory skills, accuracy and attention to detail. Pro: Everyone enjoyed their breakfast, and was especially pleased with the home fries - we like them crispy and seasoned. Tolerable: The food took approximately 15 mins to arrive, but we were chatting among ourselves to pass the time. It was a little more pricey than we would have liked, but the portion size exceeded our expectations. There didn't seem to be any cons except that there was a column behind the table minimizing some of the space, but everyone was pleased and didn't seem to have any complaints. Even a snowstorm doesn't keep Toronto diners down, as we discovered last weekend at Jump in January. It was quieter than usual due to the weather, but our food was very good. We had an extremely affable waiter from England. The service started out a bit slow, with water poured and wine ordered but 25 minutes before some bread arrived. If we hadn't been so hungry beforehand we might not have noticed. Otherwise, the food was excellent. The Bacon-Wrapped Boneless Quail appetizer was absolutely delicious. The Wild & Tame Mushroom Soup was good, but as we told our server, it needed some cream to give it more depth and round out the taste. The Mahogany-Glazed Black Cod with Lentils was very good, and my partner had the delicious Beef Tenderloin. We'll come back again, but the pacing is a bit slow, so you can't be in a hurry if you're dining here. Read more

The nachos are to die for, and I don't even like nachos very much. The menu was severely limited due to the incredible business that is Pride Week, and I was at a stretch finding something vegetarian and to my liking. After being told that they were accepting no substitutions (understandably, but I just wanted no mayo and onion on the veggie burger), I went with my second choice, the curry. I wasn't expecting much, but it succeeded my expectations. Not fantastic and it needed more than a sprinkle of salt, but pleasant nonetheless. Co-diners raved about their nachos and pulled pork. Service was a bit scattered due to business, but were very friendly. When a beer was brought to our table that wasn't ordered -- but welcomed! -- he let us have it on the house. This restaurant is fantastic! You are in complete darkness, served by visually impaired staff...to basically give you the feeling of what it is like to be completely blind. The service was impeccable! Our server was very polite and always asked if we needed anything. The food is wonderful and fresh. Eating in complete darkness is really an experience on it's own. I first visited Allen's back in the 80's, not long after it opened, and I was instantly smitten. So much so, in fact that I moved into the neighbourhood! The decor of Fusaro's is very nice and modern, and the atmosphere is relaxing. I ordered the breakfast wrap which was the best I have ever had! My aunt had the calabrese, and my mom ordered cinque panini, and they both thoroughly enjoyed their meals. The prices are very inexpensive. Three meals and coffee for each us came to only $30. On a whim on a perfect day this summer, I found myself on Center Island with a delightful 2-person-bike rental. My companion and I biked to Ward Island and stumbled upon this little gem of a cafe. We sat on the backyard patio and it was a brilliant sight. Perfectly tree-shaded area with a gentle breeze to set off your view of the lovely garden and the lake behind it. The service was good: warm and attentive. The food was nicely done, and I enjoyed my salad (very filling) and chatting in the pleasant surroundings. This is a perfect place to stop for a break, a light meal or a cool drink on a warm day. I will definitely check back upon returning to The Island. Read more
